Bro. I have to tell you about these comics, bro. It’s about the story, bro, and the art, bro. Just, bro. You have to read these, bro. (I’m stopping now. I promise, that will make more sense once you read the comics.) I don’t remember when I started hearing about Fraction and Aja’s Hawkeye, since they started a few years ago. It might have been online, it might have been my like-minded friend who’s always telling me about what she’s reading. All I knew is that […]
Hawkguy!
Hawkeye: Little Hits is a really weird book. The second collected, trade paperback of Matt Fraction’s run, this volume still has the everyman humor of the only not-super member of the Avengers. For the most part, the art is still the minimalist work it was in Volume 1, and the plot is still Hawkeye mostly dealing with personal problems instead of global threats. Read the rest at Pop Culture Penalty Box.
Kate Bishop, superhero detective.
Didn’t like this one as much as the previous ones, but not because of lack of Clint (although I did miss him), but more because I didn’t really like the bad guy in this one. This one entirely follows Kate in her adventures in L.A., but nothing happens like she thinks it will. When she gets there and tries to check in to her hotel, her card is declined, and her car repossessed. And the nice woman who helps her out and takes her to […]
Pizza dog is the best.
When you think “superhero comic,” nothing about what Matt Fraction is doing with Hawkeye will come to mind. The style alone with its limited color palette and cartoonish art (but in a wonderful, highly stylized way) is enough to set it apart. Each issue (for the most part) stands alone. Also for the most part, the concerns of this comic are not thwarting global domination or defeating bad guys with world-destroying powers or stopping galactic assholes from destroying the Earth. Nope, our two Hawkeyes (Clint […]
Hawkeye, but funny!
Who is Hawkeye outside of the Avengers? What does Clint Barton do when he’s not being Hawkeye? Apparently start lots of fights, shell out tons of cash, hang out with young Avenger Kate Bishop, and also be a total smartass. Each issue is a sort of stand-alone thriller with Clint and Kate getting in and out of all kinds of trouble. Some of the conflicts are as small as saving an apartment building or a dog, and as large as a billion dollar sting operation […]
Score One For the Little Guy
Hawkeye. He’s not the lamest super hero to grace either our comic books or our screens, but he does take work. He’s a regular human being with high visual acuity and a bow and arrow. At one point in this comic, he points out that this is a neolithic weapon. Sure, it was a crucial part of any half decent army for thousands of years, but in a world with intercontinental ballistic missiles and machine guns, what good is an archer? Come to that, what […]
