“I might be young, but I am good. I work hard, and I’m a good person. I know what’s right. I know what’s wrong. And if you give me this chance– if you just give me one shot — I won’t let you down. I promise.”

Hawkeye Volume 3: L.A. Woman (Collecting: Hawkeye #14, 16, 18, 20, Annual 1) Volume 3 chronicles Kate Bishop’s time after she leaves New York (and her partnership with Clint Barton) following the funeral of Grills and an argument with Clint, which we see in bits and pieces across several individual issues. This volume was unfortunately my least favorite, not because I don’t like Kate, I do, but more so because the narrative doesn’t balance Kate out with an equally strong character. Also, I really felt […]

4, 4 for 4

Hawkeye, Vol. 1: My Life As A Weapon by Matt Fraction

Death Comes As The End by Agatha Christie

Country Dark by Chris Offutt

Heaven's A Lie by Wallace Stroby

Over the weekend and into the early part of this week, I read four books. Each one merited four stars and all were good in their own unique way…   Hawkeye, Vol 1: My Life as a Weapon It’s good. I guess. No really, it’s good. All good. It’s fine. Just…it’s kind of why I don’t read a lot of comics: simplistic hero narratives with twee dialogue. I know this is what everyone wants thanks to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I’m not sure it’s what […]

Before diving into Disney+’s Hawkeye show I decided to pick up the Matt Fraction run from 2012-2016. One of my friends read them as they were releasing and she raved, suggesting them to me then as an entry into the larger comics world, but I took her up on Northanger Abbey instead. In the years since I’ve dipped my toe in, reading Chelsea Cain’s Mockingbird run, a Star War, and deep diving into Saga in all its gorgeous, heartbreaking glory (and I’m eyeing a 2022 […]

Everybody Sucks But Me

December 13, 2016 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

I have enjoyed Matt Fraction’s Hawkeye series tremendously. I enjoy Fraction’s Clint Barton much more than the Barton in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Volume 3, though, focuses on the other Hawkeye, Kate Bishop. Kate is 21 and from a wealthy family. She may be young and brash, but she’s a great Hawkeye, especially when paired with Clint Barton. Unfortunately, Clint is wallowing in his own feelings and Kate decides she can’t watch anymore. So she takes The dog, flips off daddy and heads for the […]

You’re gonna miss each and every shot you can’t be bothered to take

August 11, 2016 by Malin 3 Comments

4.5 stars I didn’t know a whole lot about Hawkeye outside of the Marvel comic book movies, where he’s clearly an excellent bowman and reclusive family man, but also Black Widow’s wise-quipping sidekick. I’ve heard good things about Matt Fraction’s run on this comic for years, and since it was on our shelf, this summer seemed like the right time to finally check it out. I’m so glad I did. Full review on  my blog.

Bro. Bro. Bro. Hey, Bro.

November 7, 2015 by narfna Leave a Comment

Bittersweet ending here, as Matt Fraction’s run on Hawkeye comes to an end, but it’s a good end. It’s been almost a month since I read this, so this review will not be great. Additionally, I read it and five other comics as part of the Dewey’s Read-a-thon, and fading real fast into the night. I was loopy and barely remember most of what I read during that period. But with that disclaimer out of the way, this was a good last volume. The first […]
