Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by JK Rowling

This is about the tenth time I’ve read this, but only the first time since I read it last year. After reading The History of Magic and Tales of Beedle the Bard, I was interested mildly in revisiting it, but then Hoopla put it on a list of books you could borrow with affecting your monthly count I went for it. Rather than review it I will simply make some stray remarks. They might end up being the same ones I made last year, but […]

If you’re going to ban Harry Potter, at least come up with a better reason

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by J.K. Rowling

Bingo 23 Banned Book The Harry Potter series has been challenged for many things including glorifying witchcraft, encouraging bad behavior like disobeying rules and lying, and for being un-Christian. This recent ban though is almost laughable, but it did make the international news (click for link): Reverend Dan Reehill, head St Edward Catholic School in Nashville, Tennessee, apparently decided that the spells presented in the series were real. He supposedly consulted the Vatican on this, and had the books removed from his school library so […]

Cbr11bingo I love this. When the first Harry Potter book came out, I read a review of it in the New York Times and thought it sounded like a fun series for kids. After The Chamber of Secrets came out, the Quality Paperback Book Club (of which I was a card carrying member) offered a deal to get both volumes in hard cover, so I took advantage of it. Like millions of people around the world, I fell in love the the stories and their […]

“I’m worth twelve of you, Malfoy.”

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone by JK Rowling

How the hell am I supposed to review Harry freaking Potter? Just the fifth best-selling book in any language of all time, nbd. I’m sure I have some original thoughts on it. I read this 12ish years ago but I was a different human then. I’ve started and finished a bachelor’s degree, gotten married, had a child, gained an astronomical amount of context, perspective, and life experience since then. I’ve also had a memory-wiping coma. One of my few resolutions this year was to reread […]

Go Ahead, Read it Again!

September 7, 2018 by genericwhitegirl 1 Comment

Can you believe the first Harry Potter book is 21 years old?!? Harry would be in his 30’s by now! Hagrid would be in his 80’s! A baby could have been born when the first book came out and be able to drink today! I’m amazed at how timeless and magical the books still are. And even after my having read this one 3 times and seen the movie, there are still little treasures here and there that I discover each time. I love Rowling’s […]
