Fun, Fast Fantasy Reads

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo

Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo

I decided to read the Shadow and Bone series after watching the first season of the series on Netflix, and the general fantasy/magic world of the Grishaverse seemed like it would be my jam. If you’re looking to cut to the chase rather than reading my take on each book: if YA Fantasy is your thing, these books are worth reading! I tore through the whole series, and while it was certainly not perfect, it was very enjoyable and every book managed to be a […]

“I keep to a strict diet of ill-advised enthusiasm and heartfelt regret.”

Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo

Before I started watching the Shadow and Bone Netflix series, I knew I wanted to read Leigh Bardugo’s books. They were on my radar when they came out but by then I was kind of burned out on YA fantasy (perish the thought!) Then over the summer, I started reading Sarah J. Maas’s fairy catnip situation (A Court of Thorns and Roses book series aka ACOTAR) which jumpstarted my dormant magical world-loving heart again. So I picked up the first Shadow and Bone book at the library and began plowing through […]

Possible Unpopular Opinion Here

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

If Shadow and Bone had been my introduction to either Leigh Bardugo’s work or the Grishaverse, I may have decided not for me. Six of Crows (both the novel and the duology) is far better written and has more interesting characters; Rule of Wolves has better character and world development for some who are introduced in the first trilogy (especially Zoya) and more interesting plot. Ninth House (non-Grishaverse and non-YA) does the unwilling chosen one thing way better and with a far more intriguing character […]

There are no others like us…and there will never be.

Siege and Storm by Leigh Bardugo

Coming off the high of reading the first couple of A Crown of Thorn and Roses books, I enjoyed the first book in this trilogy but was a little less enthusiastic about it. Compared to the ACOTAR books, well, I just wasn’t feeling the same pull. They share a lot of the same things: heroines who struggle with their “powers,” love triangles, fantastical worlds, but Shadow and Bone didn’t quite suck me into the story as much. I think part of it was having a hard time with the […]

Is this the final Grishaverse book? I hope not

Rule of Wolves by Leigh Bardugo

4.5 stars CBR13 Bingo: Fauna (dragon, wolf, falcon and fox on the cover) In this second part of the King of Scars duology, the stakes are ridiculously high, pretty much as soon as we start off. The book starts pretty much immediately after the end of King of Scars, and if you’re not caught up with all the books in the Grishaverse so far, this review will probably spoil things for you. Continue at your own risk. Nikolai Lantsov has made some peace with the […]

The problem with wanting is that it makes us weak.

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

CBR13 BINGO: Pandemic and 1/2 Cannonball! I used to read a lot more YA. A lot as in almost exclusively, and was particularly drawn to the fantasy/supernatural end of that spectrum. Rife with trilogies and series, which are also my bag, I fell down that particular rabbit hole for years. I think I was a little overloaded on it after awhile and when books began to blur together, I kind of phased out. I guess when you get to the point where you can’t remember which […]
