Continuing the Grishaverse

Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo

Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

July 8, 2024 by Tracy Leave a Comment

I enjoyed both of these books, especially Crooked Kingdom, though I didn’t think they were a drastic improvement over the Shadow and Bone trilogy, which surprised me a bit since so many people seem to prefer this duology. I think they’re almost equally good, with the duology slightly edging out the trilogy. In Six of Crows, we meet Kaz Brekker, who essentially runs a crew called the Dregs. He gets the opportunity of a lifetime when Jan Van Eck offers a lot of money for […]

“Love was the destroyer. It made mourners, widows, left misery in its wake. Grief and love were one and the same. Grief was the shadow love left when it was gone.”

Rules of Wolves by Leigh Bardugo

CBR Bingo – Take Flight This is the final book both in the King of Scars duology, and in Bardugo’s entire Grishaverse, and it wraps everything up very satisfyingly. We were reunited with some favorite characters from across her universe, good triumphed over evil, and love melted even the most grief-stricken and cold hearts. (Sidenote: I’ve chosen this book for the”take flight” bingo category because aerial warfare has a huge role in this world, not to mention two characters who develop the skill of flight […]

“Most of us can hide our greatest hurts and longings. It’s how we survive each day. We pretend the pain isn’t there, that we are made of scars instead of wounds.”

King of Scars (King of Scars #1) by Leigh Bardugo

CBR Bingo – On The Road I don’t read a lot of YA but a good friend of mine and many members of the CBR community have raved about Bardugo’s world, so I’m in for the long haul. If you’re new to it, a piece of advice. I was told to ignore chronological order when beginning because the Six of Crows duology is so much better than the original Shadow and Bone trilogy. I was skeptical but heeded that advice and I’m glad I did […]

“I will strip away all that you know, all that you love, until you have no shelter but mine.”

Ruin & Rising (Shadow and Bone #3) by Leigh Bardugo

In one word: Predictable Cannonball Read Bingo: Verse Leigh Bardugo created a detailed YA universe with interesting magical elements, warring factions, and all the trappings of a good fantasy tale; however, my time spent in Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse has been uneven. Though I loved her original duology, this trilogy didn’t do it for me. But I finished it. YAY! Or I should say we finished it, as I read the last half of this novel aloud to my teen. Unbeknownst to me, he still likes […]

“The Darkling slumped back in his chair. “Fine,” he said with a weary shrug. “Make me your villain.”

Shadow and Bone (Shadow and Bone Trilogy #1) by Leigh Bardugo

In one word: Fine Cannonball Read Bingo: Adapt I don’t read a lot of YA so I’m a late adopter of what’s hot in the genre, so I first heard of Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse books on a Cannonball Read Zoom meet-up. My CBR buddies told me I could skip the trilogy (which chronologically takes place first) and go right to the duology, as the duology was better, and doesn’t really build on the action of the trilogy. Other than a romance novel, I have never […]

A Satisfying Conclusion (For Now…)

King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo

Rule of Wolves by Leigh Bardugo

October 23, 2022 by anana Leave a Comment

After watching the Shadow and Bone series on Netflix, 2022 became the year of Leigh Bardugo for me – and although I didn’t connect equally to all of her work, overall I’ve very much enjoyed this adventure. I started out with the original Shadow and Bone trilogy, then moved on to the Six of Crows duology, took a brief detour to read the first of the Alex Stern Series, and now I’ve rounded out the year with the King of Scars duology.  For me, these […]
