A heartstring pulling, tear jerking story

If Anything Happens I Love You by Will McCormack

September 19, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I did and do like this book, If Anything Happens I Love You . However, it is a “pull at your heartstrings” story that is a smidgen pushy. Yet, the fact the creators, Will McCormack, Michael Govier, and  Youngran Nho focus on the life of our main character, and not her death, is refreshing. Of course, we see the grieving of her parents, but that is just a piece of the larger puzzle of the situation at hand. This is a celebration of life, love and healing. […]

Trying to find the Better Place

Better Place by Duane Murray

September 19, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I thought that the graphic novel, Better Place by Duane Murray was about a kid who played hockey. Maybe he would have some problems in school, some bully or something, but nothing overly serious or we had not seen before. But then we find that the mature theme of death is put into play and the child, Dylan (of cover fame), is not your average hockey player. In fact, hockey is far from what he does. He and his grandfather are not just two peas in the pod, […]

crying in h mart cover

For a long time I had tried to belong in America, wanted and wished for it more than anything, but in that moment all I wanted was to be accepted as a Korean by two people who refused to claim me.

Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

September 17, 2023 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

“Mom’s afraid you two will fight if you come,” my father admitted later. “She knows she has to put all her focus into getting better.” I assumed the seven years I’d lived away from home had healed the wounds between us, that the strain built up in my teenage years had been forgotten. Now we were closer than ever, but my father’s admission revealed there were memories of which my mother could not let go.” ― Michelle Zauner, Crying in H Mart “Sweet braised black […]

If this is the third volume of poetry, wonder what the rest is like

Life in the Past Lane by Peter Carlaftes

September 11, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I had an online reader link to Awe and Other Words Like Wow: Poem by Kat Georges. I was somewhat excited because I had no idea what it was going to be like. I had little description and since it was one of my older saved links, I had forgotten why I had saved it in the first place. I only knew it was poetry because it said Poem. I clicked on the Click Here to Read Button and this image of a gray hair (I assumed) […]

Constructive Criticism

The Last Word by Taylor Adams

September 3, 2023 by Pooja Leave a Comment

CBR 15 Bingo – You Are Here: The setting is incredibly self-contained, with nearly all of the action taking place in the same isolated house on a beach. After Emma leaves a negative review on a self-published book, she discovers that some authors take such things very, very personally. I picked up this book because it amused me that someone would take the unfortunately true tales of authors coming after readers who’ve left negative reviews on their books (generally online, but at least in one case physically) and write […]

Loss and Love

Always Sisters: A Story of Loss and Love by Saira Mir

August 16, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When you see a book with the title Always Sisters: A Story of Loss and Love a lot can go through your mind, as I know it did for me. Which was mostly what we were to deal with in the case of death. Disease? Accident? An older sibling taking their own life? Not to mention, is this going to be a straight forward or a “sappy” read. For me that made the process of reading this book perhaps more interesting than the book itself. […]
