Two very different books, two very different reactions

On a Pale Horse by Piers Anthony

Blood Music by Greg Bear

November 15, 2023 by ingres77 Leave a Comment

On a Pale Horse (1983) by Piers Anthony – 4 stars Zane is poor. Jobless. He lives a pathetic existence, and has little to look forward to. A shop keeper attempts to sell him powerful gems that can give him everything he wants. A magical gem that can point him in the direction of a woman who will love him absolutely? Tempting, but Zane can’t afford it. How about one that will grant him wealth beyond imagining? Absurd – that would have to be far […]

Darwin's Children by Greg Bear

September 10, 2022 by sabian30 Leave a Comment

I don’t generally read Mr. Bear’s science fiction novels, but I was at a recent library book sale and picked up this futuristic tale of a generation of mutated children. I was at a disadvantage because I hadn’t read the first novel, Darwin’s Radio, but I plowed ahead anyway. A terrible virus called SHRV has infected many pregnant mothers. Their offspring are smart, tall, and use their freckles to communicate with one another. They also have acute hearing and identify each other by smell. Several […]

Interesting concept, no interesting characters

July 10, 2017 by Bothari43 Leave a Comment

I couldn’t figure out where to even begin writing a plot synopsis for this dense monster of a book, so I checked Amazon and Goodreads to see if there was a recap I could start with. They were all three paragraphs long or more, and that would be my whole review! So apparently nobody knows how to summarize this mess. Let’s see. A few ‘special’ misfits exist in our time, able to see all possible paths from all possible actions and skip to the best […]

Are aliens trying to kill us?

February 27, 2016 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

So I finally finished this book last night. I actually quit halfway through, & this Cannonball is the only reason I picked it back up again to finish! I wanted to get credit for all of the reading I did ? Anyway, that’s not a good sign, right? I really liked this book at the beginning. It had an interesting premise, & the potential for an apocalypse, which is usually my jam.  It started out really cool.  There were a few different characters, an they […]
