When the Olympians were kids

Zeus and the Thunderbolt of Doom Graphic Novel (1), by David Campiti

Poseidon and the Sea of Fury Graphic Novel (2)  by David Campiti

Hades and the Helm of Darkness Graphic Novel (3)  by David Campiti

Hyperion and the Great Balls of Fire Graphic Novel (4) by David Campiti

September 19, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Heroes in Training Graphic Novel series is adapted by David Campiti and based on the Joan Holub and Suzanne Willians novels for probably about second to fourth grade readers (going by the graphic novels). The myths of the Olympians are told in modern tones, with the original setting of some of their backstories (Zeus grew up on an island, Poseidon learns he is King of the Ocean) but they are not always true to the original stories. The first three books focus on one of the […]

CBR 15 Bingo – Relation”ship”

Circe by Madeline Miller

July 23, 2023 by RevGirlUtena 1 Comment

I was very late to the party on this one, but I’m sure glad I was invited. I heard how good this book was for a few years, but for one reason or another, I never got around to it. I did read The Song of Achilles last year and loved it, but I didn’t want to dive into Circe immediately afterwards. Achilles is HEARTBREAKING and I needed a breather. When I was a kid, I was OBSESSED with Greek Mythology, so the story of […]

Back then we prayed to the gods and went on killing sprees. Now we have Zoloft.

Fit for the Gods: Greek Mythology Reimagined by Jenn Northington and S. Zainab Williams

July 15, 2023 by Emmalita 2 Comments

Zoraida Cordova knows what’s what. Her story, “The Gorgon Confessionals,” opens Fit for the Gods by imagining that the gods, immortals, heroes and villains of Greek mythology are regenerating into the modern world, they have their memories, but not necessarily their powers. Through a documentary series, Melpomene, the Muse of Tragedy, is examining the story of Medusa and Perseus through a series of interviews. Zeus is a Republican candidate for President. (Vote Hades!). The stories by two of my favorite authors, Suleikha Snyder and Alyssa Cole […]

Camp Half-Blood 4 Life (Percy Jackson and the Olympians series review)

The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

The Sea of Monsters by Rick Riordan

The Titan’s Curse by Rick Riordan

The Battle of the Labyrinth by Rick Riordan

The Last Olympian by Rick Riordan

I read this series when it was originally published and didn’t think about it much after I’d finished. I liked it, yes, but it wasn’t a new obsession for me and I never really planned on revisiting Percy’s world. Then I watched the teaser for the Disney+ show coming out next year and checked them out from the library and that’s how I spent my last two weeks. The series follows Percy Jackson, who finds out he’s a demigod, the son of Poseidon and a […]

DNF Part 1: Crossing these off my list

The Greek Myths by Robert Graves

Troy by Stephen Fry

I Want to Be Where the Normal People Are by Rachel Bloom

Paris Dallencourt Is About to Crumble by Alexis Hall

June 15, 2023 by carmelpie Leave a Comment

Here is the first batch of “did not finish” for CBR 15. Troy by Stephen Fry The audio book was 11 hours. Listened to about half of it. Skipped quite a bit. Still didn’t finish it. I read Mythos and thought that the audiobook version of Troy would be easier to digest. It was not. Greek Myths by Robert Graves This is basically an encyclopedia of Greek myths. Maybe you can use this as some sort of reference material. But I could not get through […]

“‘Why would anyone love a monster?’ asked Perseus. ‘Who are you to decide who is worthy of love?’ said Hermes. ‘I mean, I wasn’t…’ ‘And who are you to decide who is a monster?’”

Stone Blind by Natalie Haynes

April 4, 2023 by narfna Leave a Comment

I knew I was going to like this, but I didn’t quite expect to like it as much as I did. Sometime in the near future, we’re going to hit the saturation point for Greek mythology retellings in the literary marketplace, but it seems we’re at the peak right now, and it can be hard to sort out the copycat clones from the worthwhile without reading them first. Stone Blind is one of the worthwhile. It’s not enough to just retell a myth, even if you are […]
