Unfortunately a little underwhelmed by this one.

The Sandman, Vol. 9: The Kindly Ones by Neil Gaiman

August 10, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

I feel like I might be missing something here. I liked reading this but it wasn’t my favorite of the Sandman comics, and I don’t get the rapturous praise for it. I think some of my reaction may be again that I have read this series so spread out and I’m not making the connections with previous characters like I should. Some of it is also probably that it’s not just vibrating on the right frequency for me. Shrug. This is the climax, the denouement […]

Only two books left now in this series!

The Sandman, Vol. 8: World's End by Neil Gaiman

July 16, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

My quest to complete reviews for books I read back in April is almost complete. Soon I will move on to May! And then perhaps June, and July. (Ughhhhhh.) My memory on this one isn’t the best, but I remember liking it. Not very much Morpheus, except for hints and cameos (and foreshadowing! What the fuck, Gaiman, just give away your sad plot, why don’t you??) A lot of the stories I liked more than others. There’s a ton of stories within stories action here, […]

This series is like the ideal fantasy college experience. Acceptance and friends and lots of pies.

Check, Please!, Book 2: Sticks & Scones by Ngozi Ukazu

July 6, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

Again, read this in April, don’t remember as well as I should. PSA: Always write your reviews within a week of finishing the book! It doesn’t end well otherwise! (Writing this mostly for future Ashley, who insists on being a total asshole in this regard.) It was cute! I remember that. Bitty and the other hockey bros are a good bunch of people to hang out with for an hour or two (these are very fast reads). And this one, if I’m remembering correctly, had […]

Another five star review for this wonderful graphic memoir.

Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe

April 14, 2020 by narfna 3 Comments

Note: We reached back to CBR12 to feature this review of Maia Kobabe’s Gender Queer. This year there is a renewed push to restrict access to books that reference race, gender, and sexuality. Kobabe wrote and illustrated an op-ed in the Washington Post on the need for queer kids to have access to queer books. In addition, eir was a guest on the Washington Post podcast, Please Go On. I have a lot that I want to say about this memoir, but I can’t figure out how to […]

Squirrel Girl continues to delight with choose your own adventure, dating drama, and computer science! (bonus review from Ysakitty)

The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl Vol. 4: I Kissed a Squirrel and I Liked It by Ryan North (writer), Erica Henderson (artist), Jacob Chabot (artist)

July 3, 2019 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

Squirrel Girl a.k.a. Doreen Green is at the top of my favorite superhero list and I love sharing her with people unfamiliar with this awesome heroine.  My daughters look up to her and you couldn’t ask for a better role model.  In this fourth graphic novel collection there are two particular issues that stand out for their uniqueness in my (albeit limited) comic reading.  The book starts with a choose your own adventure and ends with an issue devoted entirely to using computer science.  In […]

A sweet coming of age and coming out romance.

Heartstopper, Vol. 1 by Alice Oseman

June 24, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

I happened to see someone I don’t even follow review the webcomic version of this lovely little story one Saturday. Someone in my feed had liked their review; they had included a link. I clicked it. I then spent the next couple of hours feverishly reading through it, until I finally had caught up with the latest post. I think that was about a year ago, and it’s still going. You wouldn’t do wrong by yourself to buy this hard copy, or the second volume […]
