A dense, rich graphic memoir

July 14, 2015 by bonnie Leave a Comment

I swore I would not fall behind in CBR Reviews. Lo and behold, I am about ten reviews behind. I blame a vacation, a wedding, and my online class grading for getting me behind in my reviewing (but hey, still reading, amirite?). I’ll stop apologizing and get right to it: I’ve been trying to expand my graphic novel “vocabulary,” and I especially find the concept of graphic memoirs intriguing. So when I heard about G.B. Tran’s Vietnamerica, my curiosity was piqued. I’ve read Thanhha Lai’s […]

If You Liked Dr. Horrible, You’ll Like This

July 14, 2015 by Jenny S 3 Comments

I heard Noelle Stevenson on NPR’s All Things Considered a few months back talking about this book and about being a woman who loves comics and that made me interested in tracking down Nimona. It did not disappoint. I enjoyed this tale of a supervillian, Lord Ballister Blackheart, who has his world thrown upside down by the arrival of a young woman, Nimona, who wants to be his sidekick and help him improve his image. Nimona is a shape shifter but she also has lots […]

Sometimes Something Simple Can Comfort The Most

July 12, 2015 by yesknopemaybe 1 Comment

This was a perfect graphic novel for newbies to the genre like me. I read Persepolis a looooong time ago, but this year I’ve been wanting to explore the genre more and this seemed like the perfect follow-up to the wonderful Hyperbole and a Half. I’ve always loved eating and cooking, so this graphic memoir was a perfect fit. Lucy Knisley grew up surrounded by family and friends in the food business (chefs, gourmets, critics, restaurant owners), so delicious food filled her life from the […]

Happy Birthday, Mr. Tesla!

July 11, 2015 by Emmalita Leave a Comment

Atomic Robo has been one of my favorite discoveries of the year. It isn’t deep, but it is smart and fun. Volume 5 is in many ways Robo’s origin story, not the origin of how he came to be, but the origin of how he became a crime fighting action scientist. It introduces us to young Robo, still living with his creator, Nikolai Tesla. Robo is bored with his studies and seeks adventure in adventure science comic books. One night he sees Jack Tarot, a […]

A Perfect (yet haunting) Book for your Summer Reading List

July 4, 2015 by Jenny S Leave a Comment

I really loved this graphic novel by Jillian Tamaki & Mariko Tamaki. The black and white and purplish color palette reminded me of Blueberries for Sal, a picture book I loved as a kid, and the story made me think about summers of my childhood, where nothing happened but everything happened at the same time. This is the story of Rose, who comes to Awago Beach every summer with her mom and dad and hangs out with her “summer friend,” Windy. This summer, though, things […]

Superhero Noir

June 28, 2015 by llp Leave a Comment

Prior to the recent Netflix series starring the delightful Charlie Cox, my only exposure to the character of Daredevil was the truly awful Ben Affleck movie. That movie probably set back the superhero/comic book movie genre by a few years, yeeee. Anyways, the series is just excellent, and so I decided to pick up this Frank Miller trade paperback from the 90s, which expands upon Daredevil’s origin story. I have to admit, I was a bit cynical about it, because Frank Miller gets a lot […]
