4.5 stars Because I have a lot of reviews to catch up on, thanks to my clumsiness which caused my brain to get rattled and shook up, I’m once again resorting to plot summary via Goodreads: Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: to prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies […]
“One can forgive but one should never forget.”
Aside from the five stars, I also gave it four Tracey Jordans on the Hard to Watch/Read scale. Don’t get my wrong, it’s an absolutely beautiful book, but it’s also moving and powerful. Lots of emotions in this one. Satrapi chronicles her life as a teen in Iran during the unrest in the 1980’s. The cutesy, childlike drawings are juxtaposed against the atrocities they depict. For example, one panel is a short bio of one of her parents’ friends, newly released from jail for being […]
Why Two Years?
I’m still not sure if I like this one or not, but I’m definitely intrigued by this new series. Sometimes I’m okay with the author taking a sink or swim approach for the reader; either you’ll pick up the story as it goes along or you’ll spend too much time stressing the details and give up in frustration. It usually depends on the author, with the right one, I feel like I at least have someone in a rowboat encouraging me to press on. But […]
In a World of Gritty Comics, There is Squirrel Girl
And she’s just happy to be here! It’s actually really refreshing to have a superhero that has no twisted past baggage and crippling existential crises. Of course, if I had to be around Squirrel Girl 24/7, her excessive perkiness would probably grate on my very last nerve. But after reading some pretty dark comics, I was in the mood for a hero that’s excited to be starting college and wondering how many boxes of nuts is too many boxes of nuts for a dorm room. […]
Cute, but not for me
I regularly read all kinds of books, including young adult and children’s literature, but this is the first time I’ve ever felt too old to enjoy a book for kids. That being said, I can’t fault it just because I’m not in the target demographic. I think it’d be a fun series of comics for preteens and young teenagers. Jo, April, Mal, Molly, and Ripley are five fun girls who are living it up at Miss Qiunzilla Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s camp for ladies into […]
A remarkable story of childhood and adolescence
Three summers ago, I devoured Persepolis, an amazing graphic memoir about Marjane Satrapi’s education and coming-of-age during and after the Iranian Islamic Revolution. Satrapi’s candid recounting of events and biting humor made the book memorable, so I instantly thought of it when developing my sophomore-level survey for this fall. I haven’t read it since that summer, so it was a great joy to revisit and revel in all over again. Marjane Satrapi was an elementary-age schoolchild when the Iranian Revolution took place in 1979. She […]
