I find your lack of Lying Cat disturbing

July 12, 2016 by maydays 8 Comments

I learned of this series in a comment from emmalita and I’m very grateful!  I TORE through Volumes 1-5 last year, trading volumes with my best reading buddy.  It’s the last time I remember staying up until 2am to read.  This is my first time reading a graphic novel series, and I’m still blown away by the art and the ability to convey so much story in each frame. I reviewed Volume 5 before diving in, which was a good idea after a long break. […]

A castle full of odd ducks and misfits

July 10, 2016 by Malin Leave a Comment

The opening story of Castle Waiting, which explains how the castle came to be abandoned, so to speak, is a variation on Sleeping Beauty. Only once the princess is awakened from her century of sleep and the hedge surrounding the castle lets people in and out, she goes off with her prince and pretty much forgets about the place where she slumbered and the people in it. As the years pass, the castle becomes a refuge for various outcasts and odd characters, with the princess’ […]

Order is Always One Realization Away From Disintegration

July 10, 2016 by Emmalita 2 Comments

A few weeks ago fellow Cannonballer, Vermillion, was posting pictures of the swag he was getting and thoughts he was having at the State of Black Science Fiction Con in Atlanta. One of the the things he posted about was Genius, and Genius‘ artist, Afua Richardson. Genius is about a young African American woman who leads her neighbors in taking back their Los Angeles neighborhood from corrupt cops. It arrived in the mail and I gobbled it up. But I’ve been sitting on the review […]

Forget the stupid rat-creatures. Stupid and annoying Phoney Bone, more like it

July 9, 2016 by Malin 1 Comment

The three Bone cousins Fone Bone (renamed Hero Bone in my head), Smiley Bone (Comic Relief Bone) and Phoney Bone (Greedy, or frequently Insufferable, Bone) have been driven out of their home town of Boneville because Phoney Bone had some sort of get rich quick scheme and scammed the entire town, and now an angry mob has driven them off. They are wandering in the wilderness when they are attacked by a huge swarm of locusts and end up in a mysterious forest in a […]

I would be non-compliant in so many different ways

July 9, 2016 by Malin 3 Comments

“In the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth. Mother Earth, we used to say, before we understood. Space is the mother who receives us, you see? Earth is the father. And your father has cast you out. For your trespasses, your gluttony, your pride, your weakness, and your wickedness are such that you are beyond correction and castigation. Like a cancer you must be excised from the world that bore you. For the well-being of us all, lest your sickness spread. You will […]

To your union, and the hope that you provide

July 7, 2016 by baxlala 2 Comments

Remember on Sex and the City (yeah, that’s right) when Carrie and Miranda try on wedding dresses, just for shits and giggles, and Carrie has a panic attack? That’s exactly how I felt about trying on wedding dresses, not because I didn’t want to marry my fiance (like Carrie) but because I already hate shopping AND trying on clothes. The thought of trying on wedding dresses in front of other people made my skin crawl. I just wanted something comfortable, something non-strapless, and a dress […]
