What the heck are baggywrinkles?

November 14, 2016 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

Given to me as a birthday present, I was intrigued by the title and cover of “Baggywrinkles: A Lubber’s Guide to Life at Sea”.  At the time I joked that it was a good length for me to include in my Cannonball Read this year.  This past Saturday I was running out the door to sit in a waiting room and needed a new book to read.  I reached for a sci-fi novel called “Nova” that’s been waiting to be read for months now only […]

Probably the best book I’ve read all year

September 25, 2016 by yesknopemaybe 2 Comments

I knew this book would be great going in because it won both a Caldecott Honor and Printz Honor award, but I was still completely blown away. Definitely the most beautiful book I’ve read this year and maybe ever. I would hang so many of these panels up on my walls as standalone art. Not only is the art gobsmackingly stunning, the story is well written as well. Rose and Windy spend every summer together when their families stay in cabins at a lake in […]

It’s scary to be brave

September 18, 2016 by maydays 1 Comment

My 11yo daughter loved Telgemeier’s Sisters, Smile, and Drama, so this was a must-order for me when it came out last week.  We opened the package this morning and she and I have both already read this sweet graphic novel from cover to cover!  My 8yo son is up next. Catrina and her family are moving to a blustery coastal California town in the hopes that the climate will be better for Catrina’s little sister Maya, who has cystic fibrosis.  Catrina is torn between wanting […]

OMG BRIAN SELZNICK!!!!

September 3, 2016 by bonnie Leave a Comment

Is there such a thing as Brian Selznick addiction? Because OMG I totally have it. I devoured his two previous books in a mere afternoon apiece as they each came out. I’m just sad I forgot to put a hold on this when it was first released. I appreciate the way he merges simple charcoal-like sketches with a complex and layered story that helps us merge art and text. The Marvels is more of the same that I’ve come to expect. I can’t decide if […]

“Oh, for God’s sake, it’s Patsy!”

September 2, 2016 by Caitycat 1 Comment

This series is my new favorite thing. Patsy Walker/Hellcat is really funny and spunky and awesome. It ranks up there with my other favorite, The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl. You can read my full review here. P.S. The title is from this guy here: I actually think about this scene and the line delivery all the time.

Good, Evil and the Vast In Between

August 29, 2016 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

Nimona, a graphic novel that was a finalist for the National Book Award, features knights and dragons and beings with amazing powers. It is not, however, your typical good versus evil story. Nimona is full of wonderful shades of gray in the form of its three main characters: Nimona, Ballister Blackheart, and Ambrosius Goldenloin. Young Nimona, a teen, shows up at the lair of the well known supervillain Ballistair Blackheart to become his uninvited sidekick. She is more than ready to get involved in evil […]
