This book hijacked my TBR, no regrets

Shades of Magic: The Steel Prince - vol. 1 by V.E. Schwab (author), Andrea Olimpieri (artist)

February 16, 2020 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

When I shared my review of Vengeful on FaceBook, a friend chimed in asking if I knew about Schwab’s graphic novel series.  I had not and was intrigued.  Then my favorite independent celebrated its grand reopening, after moving locations, so I treated myself and picked up The Steel Prince.  The cover is eye catching and it instantly grabbed my attention. At the time, I was behind in review writing and had intended to read Spinning Silver, by Naomi Novik, once the reviews were written.  After just […]

I keep writing titles for this post and they’re all crap, just read Pumpkinheads, you’ll thank me later

Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell (author), Faith Erin Hicks (artist)

February 13, 2020 by Dome'Loki 4 Comments

Fall is my favorite season.  I love pretty much everything about it and going to a pumpkin patch is high on my list of must do activities.  When I heard Rainbow Rowell and Faith Erin Hicks talking about Pumpkinheads at a comic convention, I knew that this book must be mine and it did not disappoint!  The pumpkin patch is just an endearing setting (albeit one I ardently wish I could visit and inspired by a real pumpkin patch Rowell visited growing up), what makes this […]

Lumberjanes is the story of five young women at a strange and magical summer camp. April is ambitious, tiny, and ridiculously strong. Riley is the youngest, and sometimes a bit over-enthusiastic. The fluff that almost, almost got interesting

Mooncakes by Wendy Xu, Suzanne Walker

February 1, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Mooncakes is a fluffy light read, but it could have been so much more. Like a lot of the graphic novels I tend to pick up, this one features a fairly YA story about 2 queer characters probably in their late teens who have something supernatural about them, and they must face some sort of supernatural problem while dealing with their mutual attraction to each other. Nova is a witch in training, and Tam is her werewolf childhood friend/possibly something more who moved away but […]

If the best thing is the preview to other stuff…

Lumberjanes The Shape of Friendship by Lilah Sturges

January 26, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

I wouldn’t have known this if I had not noticed the back of the book, but apparently Lumberjanes: The Shape of Friendship is the sequel to The Infernal Compass. There is very little in the story to show the two are actually connected in any other way than featuring the same general setting and cast of characters. I actually like the ideas introduced to the Lumberjane universe in The Infernal Compass, and I’m a little sad that those elements got no more development; I hope […]

Katie O’Neill continues to write charming, inclusive, all ages books

The Tea Dragon Festival by Katie O'Neill

January 22, 2020 by Dome'Loki 1 Comment

Katie O’Neill continues to write my favorite all ages books.  This is her second Tea Dragon book, the first was The Tea Dragon Society, which I reviewed for CBR10.  In the tea dragon world, society is made of several species; mundane humans, people with horns/hooves/antlers, animal people, and dragons.  There is a small amount of magic in the world, and it is all brought charmingly to life with O’Neill’s soft illustrations. Both books are wonderfully inclusive.  People come in a wide range of hues.  Relationships […]
