Lightning Round

Tonguebreaker by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha

Batman Earth One, Vol. 3 by Geoff Johns

Solomon's Vineyard by Jonathan Latimer

Antartica: Journeys to the South Pole by Walter Dean Myers

When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead

July 12, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

A few reviews of shorter books that I read quickly over the weekend and didn’t have extra time to flesh out… Tonguebreaker ***** Coming to terms with a society that doesn’t want you based on your body…and creating your own space instead…has to be a challenging thing. Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha bares her soul to the world in this collection of poems and one-act plays. Her use of language to lecture gripped me and her exploration of what it means to live in this world, to […]

Finally figured out which book I forgot to review!

Black Star by Eric Glover

June 22, 2021 by wicherwill Leave a Comment

THIS is the review I was missing, it was driving me to distraction. This was a short, punchy graphic novel which had some debut roughness but was still super enjoyable for reasons that probably apply more to me. The story is set on a (very) hostile planet, which happens to be the source for a plant which can be distilled into a cure for cancer. A floral MacGuffin, if you will, to create tension and a reason for the characters to want to make it […]

Ladies and Gentlemen, the (reading) Weekend…

Bleeding Edge by Thomas Pynchon

Times Square Red, Times Square Blue by Samuel R. Delany

Queer: A Graphic History by Meg John-Barker, Julia Scheele (illustration)

Widespread Panic by James Ellroy

Quarry's Cut by Max Allan Collins

June 20, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

Read a variety of books close to and over the weekend. Let’s check it out… Bleeding Edge **** This is a 2021 reread and it’s better than I remember. The ending disappoints but it’s still an entertaining, prescient novel. Pynchon warned us about Too Online culture and yet, here we are.   Times Square Red, Times Square Blue **** I don’t know what I expected but it wasn’t this. And I liked it! Mostly. This is like a tale of two books. It’s two essays […]

“Sometimes, there’s a story we tell ourselves. And sometimes a story is told about us.”

Cyclopedia Exotica by Aminder Dhaliwal

May 30, 2021 by ElCicco 2 Comments

I first read about artist/writer Aminder Dhaliwal in this NYT piece, then started following her Instagram account. The premise behind Cyclopedia Exotica and Dhaliwal’s art led me to purchase the book, whose message is pertinent in the current xenophobic climate in the US. Through characters who are Cyclopes in a world of the two-eyed, Dhaliwal examines the daily micro aggressions and prejudices that minorities encounter, as well as the Cyclopes’ responses to them. Anyone who does not fit the WASP-y cis/het norm will probably be […]

After School Times to Pass On

After School Hanako-kun by Aidalro

May 30, 2021 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

After-School Hanako-kun feels a little like a bunch of pieces that might have been intended for the original main series but had to be cut for one reason or another. Several of the vignettes are probably supposed to be versions of standard high school manga/anime episodes like the beach day trip or main character catches a cold and has to stay out of things but is still somehow manages to be part of the story. In fairness, this collection is supposed to be a “behind […]

Dramarama (and a delayed CANNONBALL)!

Giant Days, Vol. 1 (single issues 1-4) by John Allison, Lissa Treiman

Giant Days, Vol. 2 (single issues 5-8) by John Allison, Lissa Treiman, Max Sarin

Giant Days Vol. 3 (single issues 9-12) by John Allison, Max Sarin, Jim Campbell, Lissa Treiman

I started this review back in March (EEP!) and it has been my albatross now for nearly two months. Double EEP! I adored the web comics, and when I was feeling down around the Covid-aversary I dug into some good- old- fashioned- comfort- comics. What began as a pick-me-up purchase of the first volume became a “tune it all out” obsession once I realized that more volumes were available on both Scribd and Hoopla. My diversion turned into a marathon reading of volumes 1-12 with […]
