Witches, demons and cops

Black Magick Vol 3: Ascension 1 by Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott

June 15, 2022 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

I reviewed the first two volumes of Greg Rucka and Nicola Scott’s Black Magick series for Cannonball 10. Given the gap in time, I did a quick reread so that I could remember what was going on for this third volume. This series is pretty cool, dealing with police work and witchcraft/demons. The main character Rowan Black is a witch and police detective who finds her worlds colliding when a series of murders seems to indicate the presence of dark forces that are coming for Rowan […]

Truth, Justice and a Better World

Superman Son of Kal-El Vol. 1: The Truth by Tom Taylor, John Timms

June 14, 2022 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

A couple of weeks ago, I got a surprise delivery — a book I had ordered back in January and completely forgotten about. And it took me a minute to remember why I had ordered it. I do enjoy comics/graphic novels, but usually Superman is not one of my “must reads.” But last year DC Comics introduced a new iteration of Clark Kent’s son Jon and people lost their minds. Jonathan Kent is not just the new Superman, he is also bisexual. Moreover, Jon is […]

These are the books I finished in the month of March in which I didn’t have time or words to elaborate on… Batman: The Killing Joke *** Two of my favorites team up for a Batman prose novel? Yes! But the end result is just okay. Interestingly enough, I think both writers do a better job with the random Gothamites than they do with the Caped Crusader and his primary nemesis. You’re fine just reading Alan Moore’s legendary graphic novel. The Big East: Inside the […]

In a time when conspiracy theories run rampant, Sabrina seems all the more vital a read

Sabrina by Nick Drnaso

March 28, 2022 by Travis_J_Smith Leave a Comment

It’s not exactly been the best time for reading. I’m spending most of my breaks at work looking for a different job, since the one I started at two weeks ago sold me a bill of lies, and I’ve been sick for what feels like about half the time lately. Today, I’m on my second cold in a row. And when you’re tired on a good day, like I am, a cold will leave you with practically no energy to speak of. This means reading […]

So Lovely

The Magic Fish by Trung Le Nguyen

March 22, 2022 by Ellesfena 1 Comment

The Magic Fish is an absolutely beautiful graphic novel–both the pictures and the story itself. It’s the story of a boy, Tiến, whose been keeping a secret from his friends and family. Tiến’s parents emigrated to the U.S. from Vietnam. His parents are working on improving their English, and so every night he reads fairy tales with his mother. Katie the Catsitter

“Sadly, New York City apartments just don’t fit 218 cats well.”

Katie the Catsitter by Colleen AF Venable and Stephanie Yue

February 22, 2022 by llamareadsbooks Leave a Comment

I knew we had a hit on our hands when my 8-year-old started giggling before we even left the library. After watching him reread it five times in a row, I just had to know what was so enthralling about this book. I was completely taken in by the gorgeous art, the humor, and the sweet story of a girl who spends her summer taking care of her neighbor’s cats and oh maybe saving the world. Katie’s best friend is going to camp for the […]
