Grandparents are pretty cool

Granny and Bean by Karen Hesse

July 29, 2022 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When a grand mother and grandchild take a day to themselves, even the windy sea cannot stop them from enjoying themselves. Through the gray, cloudy skies, the wonders of the beach and ocean and the creatures around them come to life in Granny and Bean by Karen Hesse. The message is “stop and smell the roses” or in this case, pet the dogs that walk by, listen to the birds, and stop for teatime. And all this comes to life with the fun illustrations of […]

Julia goes to stay with her grandmother for the first time without her parents. And there is Something about Grandma and something about her house, the area she lives, the town and more. The things Julia does with her grandmother are different. They have sugar bread that is brought to them in a basket, that the lady delivery it places on her head.  There are different smells, colors and hot chocolate can cure homesickness. Her grandmother knows when Julia has picked limes from the garden, […]

Dumplings for Lili by Melissa Iwai

La Princesa and the Pea by Susan Middleton Elya

January 6, 2022 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

A local school was purchasing a few titles for their library. I was unaware of the picture books Dumplings for Lili and La Princessa and the Pea. Therefore, I gave them a quick peak when they came in. Both were two of the sweetest books I have read all year! (Okay, got the year joke out early.) These two books are a modern fairytale and a reimaging of a classic. Dumplings for Lili by Melissa Iwai is a lovely, illustrated book about a young girl […]

Living that Summer Dream

Summer Spirit by Elizabeth Holleville

October 13, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Summer Spirit looked out from the top shelf. I am not sure how I saw it as my little over 5-foot frame does not usually see that far above my head! But once you learn the story, maybe you will think some supernatural events took place, making my eyes be drawn upwards. Or not. After all, ghosts are not real. No matter what Elizabeth Holleville says in their young adult graphic novel. Louise, her sister, and their cousins spend part of the summer with their […]

Keeping your Family together

When We Were Alone by David Alexander Robertson

Grandpa’s Girls by Nicola I. Campbell

August 20, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Both books are very different but have the common thread of having a Native American influence, or backdrop. These would be great books to add to any collection. They both are fabulous examples of the meaning of friendship. I preferred When We Were Alone more than Grandpa’s Girls for several reasons. One reason I enjoyed it was the serious tone of the book. This might turn some people off, but even then, David Alexander Robertson has infused a great hopefulness as well. When We Were […]

But she can’t help it. It’s too much reality for an almost-eight-year-old.

My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry by Fredrik Backman

August 18, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr13bingo Book Club I wanted to do a pure Bingo. Unfortunately, I could not get myself to read the book I picked, Mary Jane by Jessica Anya Blau (a choice of a book group that purchases their books via the bookstore I work at). Therefore, I went hunting for an “easy book club recommend” and found lots of books that just sounded hard. (I am not sure what they considered easy, but one list had several over 300 paged books on it.)  But, as we […]
