Languages for the power

My Mother's Tongues: A Weaving of Languages by Uma Menon

July 19, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

My Mother’s Tongues: A Weaving of Languages is a clever story of a young girl and her family’s talents with languages. Well, her mother can speak two different languages. She has one for her mother and daughter, and another for the cashier. However, sometimes the two are mixed. And the young girl explores her family and how they learned to speak several languages, and what that means. The connection between the generations is sweet and the cultural connections are delightful to learn. Uma Menon introduces […]

Sweet stuff

When I Became Your Grandma by Susannah Shane

I'll Be There by Karl Newson

July 5, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Two so sweet that some people will be hyper after reading them books are When I Became Your Grandma and I’ll Be There. Now, there is nothing wrong with sweet, even overly sweet, if that is your thing. However, these picture books are maple candy sweet. Fantastic as you slowly let them melt in your mouth, that maple goodness sliding around on your tastebuds, but you will only need one and you’re good, But of course you’ll eat (read) two (books) because they come in […]

Granny Came Here on the Empire Windrush by Patrice Lawrence

July 5, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr15bingo South America: The grandmother is originally from the Trindade and Tobago area. I wrote in a review a while back that I have read several grandparents books. Some were sweet and some serious, but all were really delightful. And with Granny Came Here on the Empire Windrush, Patrice Lawrence wrote a picture book that was both sweet and serious. When a young girl, Ava, needs to find a person she admires to dress up for school, she is having trouble choosing. And when she confesses […]

A sleepy independent boba café, a not so sleepy secret

Super Boba Café V01 by Nidhi Chanani

June 12, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A fun story that ends a smidgen abruptly was what I felt about Super Boba Café V01 by Nidhi Chanani.  However, this is (as the volume one notes) a graphic novel which is the first book and you know that there will be more to come because of that. Not to mention the very last page has that “dun dun dun” ending where, “That’s all … for now … Folks!” should be added. If you want to find out what that ending is, you need to […]

Ding-dong, the witch is dead.

Mamo by Sas Milledge

June 12, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

A recent Wednesday of no sleep saw me not feeling well on Thursday. Taking the mental health day, I slept, and when I woke up it was too late to work, so I read. One of the books I would read that Thursday was Mamo by Sas Milledge.  This book has an odd feeling to it, or at least to me. I was picking up Scandinavian vibes to the landscape and with most of the people we see. But our main character looks like they […]

I’m guessing Tidy doesn’t have a male editor….

When Grandma Burnt Her Bra by Samantha Tidy

June 7, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

You know me, I like good humor.  Of course, offbeat humor is best. And when I find a book that is called When Grandma Burnt Her Bra and it is a picture book, you know I am all over that!  OMG, how did this one get past the censors? Samantha Tidy must have some gal-friends in high places! When the young granddaughter of the story and her grandmother start on the subject of women’s rights and feminism, watch out you dinosaurs! These women are loud […]
