“Each of us has a monster we must confront, a monster designed to test our personal weaknesses.”

The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix

This book has been on my list since I read The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires. Hendrix takes on another staple of the horror genre here: the slasher. But in this case, the focus is on what happens to those Final Girls after the credits roll. Lynette Tarkington is a final girl. As a teen, she survived a Christmas Day massacre that saw her entire family die. Lynette is older now, but she is definitely not okay. She is a creature of caution […]

My first Grady Hendrix book, won’t be my last!

The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix

30 Books in 30 Days, Vol. 2 Book 13/30 I was discombobulated for most of listening to this book. But I was interested the whole way through, and nothing about it felt lazy or half-done, like a certain other author’s work did for me. I should probably state up front that I am not at all a fan of slasher movies. In fact, I quite dislike them in general because I find them incredibly stressful and not cathartic in any way (although I have seen […]

A successful send-up is tricky to do, and I don’t think this one works

The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix

I loved Grady Hendrix’s book Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires. It was a wonderful, satirical send up of vampire novels and the Southern suburbs. I get that is wasn’t for everyone, but Hendrix really nailed his tongue-in-check, nearly meta take on vampire troupes and Southern suburb living. So when I saw that Hendrix had written a book to be a send of slasher films and final girls, I was stoked. Hendrix, however, missed this mark with this one. The set-up is straightforward: Lynette […]

The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix

The only reason why I gave this 4 stars is because that ending just had me going really at the end. Everything up until then was almost frantic and insane (in a good way) and I went really and went to sleep. I woke up this morning hoping to feel a bit differently, but nah. “The Final Girl Support Group” follows Lynnette Tarkington who is dealing with being the sole survivor of her family’s massacre over 20 years ago. Lynnette meets once a month at […]

Perfect Remains (Luc Callanach #1) by Helen Fields

How, exactly, do you decide whether the book you’ve just read is good? I can appreciate books that I struggled my way through, and I’ve torn my way through books that I hated. Clearly enjoyment is one factor and reward is another, but the two books I’ve read in the past week or so kind of threw me for a loop. One of them is right up my wheelhouse. The other, not so much. Yet I ended up loving the latter and disliking the former […]

Murder, Mayhem and Meatballs

Horrorstör by Grady Hendrix

On a dark night, three people come together to discover who has been vandalising their store: reluctant but cash-strapped Amy, pleasant but lonely Ruth Anne and manager Basil, whose corporate hard-on is probably the most terrifying thing in this book. The store they work at is Orsk, a wannabe Ikea chain of cheap DIY furniture stores (Ikea is acknowledged as the superior brand here but really, for all intents and purposes, Orsk IS Ikea). It doesn’t take long for things to go awry: a mysterious […]
