Yeah, definitely going to need a 2nd read

Harrow the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

July 24, 2024 by KimMiE" 2 Comments

CBR16 BINGO: Part 2, for the second book in the Locked Tomb series I look back fondly on the days when, in my innocence, I thought Gideon the Ninth was a complicated novel. I read that book twice, thank goodness, because if I hadn’t, I would have either been even more confused by Harrow the Ninth, or I’d have shrugged off details that didn’t make sense thinking I was simply misremembering them. After finishing Harrow the Ninth, I am spent. I’m as weak and cowed […]

The second read is even better. Like, a lot better for a book I already enjoyed once.

Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir

July 20, 2024 by KimMiE" 2 Comments

CBR16 BINGO: Part 1, for the first book in the Locked Tomb series I first read Gideon the Ninth several years ago and, while it took me a little while to get into it, I ended up really enjoying it, giving it 4 stars on Goodreads. I’ve been wanting to read Harrow the Ninth, and when it finally became available through my library, I decided to reread Gideon to refresh my memory and prep my brain. Thank goodness I decided to reread Gideon, because, first of […]

“It is very important to approach all unpleasant tasks in life as a performance art piece, especially if you are a teenager.”

Things to Do When You're Goth in the Country & Other Stories by Chavisa Woods

November 16, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

Goth or not, country or not, if you have ever been a teenager then SOMETHING in this collection of stories will speak to you. Maybe you’ve never befriended a drug addict squatting in a mausoleum, and maybe you’ve never had a bad trip at a MENSA party hosted by your girlfriend’s parents, but there are definitely some teenage feelings rolling dark and deep in all of us! Chavis Woods has labeled and celebrated that feeling of “something more”; most notably in the titular story, “Things […]

An unhappy Danish murder mystery with a science twist

August 15, 2014 by Valyruh Leave a Comment

Perhaps because of all the praise heaped on this book, I found The Dinosaur Feather to be one of the more disappointing murder mysteries I’ve read in a while. In a nutshell, the plot is centered on a furious and long-running cross-Atlantic brawl between two respected paleontologists over whether birds evolved from dinosaurs or are their own separate species (something which has been definitively resolved since, which in my view takes the wind a little bit out of the author’s sails). The strange and very […]
