“Be careful with the stories you tell about yourself”

Untamed by Glennon Doyle

July 25, 2022 by RaRaGabor Leave a Comment

Untamed is a memoir. It’s also a call to arms. And a self-help book. Mostly, though, it’s the story of a woman blowing up her life to build a better one, and her interrogation of why she had a life that required blowing up in order to find happiness. Glennon Doyle has written a couple of other books, and also had a wildly successful TED talk which is all about courage and vulnerability and the armor that we put around ourselves to protect us from […]

Enjoyed it more than may come across in this review

Untamed by Glennon Doyle

I don’t remember when or why I added this book to my list. When I read the summary, it felt like something I should read, more than something I wanted to read. Untamed is a memoir focusing on the end of Glennon Doyle’s marriage as she meets and falls in love with a woman, and an examination of how she learned to free herself from society’s expectations for women and mothers. I mostly enjoyed this book. Certain parts really didn’t resonate with my own experiences, but […]

Be a GD cheetah

Untamed by Glennon Doyle

December 22, 2021 by Sophia Leave a Comment

My book club decided to read Untamed (2020) by Glennon Doyle. It’s been on the New York Times Bestseller List and has over 4.5 stars on Amazon. It is a memoir discussing Doyle’s life and most recent struggles. My book club had mixed responses, trending toward the negative. I came from a slightly different perspective as I was the only one in our book club who had read Doyle’s earlier memoir, Love Warrior. I have mixed feelings about both of these books. I’d like to start with […]

“What we need right now is more women who have detoxed themselves so completely from the world’s expectations that they are full of nothing but themselves. What we need are women who are full of themselves. A woman who is full of herself knows and trusts herself enough to say and do what must be done. She lets the rest burn.”

This is a book that I am talking about often, will not forget reading, and will continue talking about and recommending it loudly (though I note that I’m a little late to the game, as it came out in March 2020. Upon reflection, it’s a wonder it did so well because had I tried to read this raw emotional novel in 2020 I think I might have gone off the deep end, or ran into the woods never to return). As I was saying, I’m […]

Be a Goddamn Cheetah

Untamed by Glennon Doyle

April 19, 2020 by randirock 1 Comment

Glennon Doyle hits the ground running in her latest book Untamed with a story of the caged cheetah Tabitha. Tabitha has been raised in captivity and her best friend is a Labrador named Minnie. As they watch Tabitha and Minnie perform, Doyle is captivated. She senses the ‘wild’ in Tabitha. “I nodded at Tish and kept my eyes on Tabitha as she stalked. I wished I could ask her, ‘What’s happening inside you right now?’ I knew what she’d tell me. She’d say, ‘Something’s off about my […]

A Modern Day Epic

Love Warrior: A Memoir by Glennon Doyle

January 19, 2020 by randirock 1 Comment

“Her ability to put words to her feelings and experiences is absolutely incredible,” I told my husband. “She truly has a gift.” Love Warrior is an epic, and just like the ancient oral traditions, it reads like a poem retelling Glennon Doyle’s battle through bulimia, alcoholism, sexual abuse, and infidelity. I couldn’t put it down. I could pull hundreds of quotes from the book that popped from the page screaming, “Remember me!” This will be a book I reread numerous times. In times of despair, Doyle […]
