I wolfed this down

Artie and the Wolf Moon by Olivia Stephens

November 14, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

“Do I want to read Artie and the Wolf Moon by Olivia Stephens” has been on my mind since I first saw it “advertised” as a reader online copy, when it came out and finally when I saw it on the shelf of the library a few days ago. And the answer was always no until I saw it at the library. It was not like I didn’t have four other books in hand, or have a ton at home, but my gut said, “Get […]

Talking about my best friend!

Worm and Caterpillar Are Friends Ready-to-Read Graphics Level 1 by Kaz Windness

October 12, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Normally I would just say this book, Worm and Caterpillar Are Friends Ready-to-Read Graphics Level 1, was just about friendship. And it is, but it is also about being different and yourself. And when you become your final self, this is a real coming out story that is trans based.  Worm, sweet and a bit naïve, says they are like Caterpillar, who is a bit more practical. Such as Caterpillar points out they are not the same when Worm says they are best friends who […]

Fear and oppression

Restless by Joseph Kai

October 11, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This graphic novel by Joseph Kai, Restless,  is a quick but not easy read. Things are a bit abstract, surreal and very introspective all at once.  The reality of the times and the dreams and fears Kai’s character unfolds is a bumpy path. The art is either a like or not, really little to no in-between. There are possible triggers with nudity, violence, sexual situations, and GLBTQ issues. Overall, this book is not for everyone, but perhaps everyone should read it. We are looking into […]

Silly questions, awkward clichés, trials of life, and other stuff

Queer Chameleon and Friends by Amee Wilson

September 25, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I might have seen Amee Wilson’s work online, after all the colorful chameleon icon is a bit hard to miss. However, I am not as familiar as I probably should be.  Therefore, when I found Queer Chameleon and Friends I was both interested in and a little leery as books that have this message can sometimes be a bit pushy. Yet, why not start it? After all, I was under no obligation to finish it. And I was put at ease with Wilson’s introduction. That might […]

Besties skipping a beat

Skip!: A Graphic Novel by Sarah Burgess.

September 21, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If strawberry lemonade was a book (or more accurately a graphic novel) it would be Skip!: A Graphic Novel by Sarah Burgess. Let me explain. First, I am thirsty and for some bizarre reason strawberry lemonade sounds really good so I used it as my metaphor. And second, it was something that was familiar and different, and it sounded like it would be both sweet and tart; sassy, with life, and with character!  Which is what Skip! is. The story is familiar (new best friends Jay and Beah start to have a serious case of the Friendship Blues […]

Two strong women

Hedy Lamarr (Little People, Big Dreams) by Sanchez Vegara

Laverne Cox (Little People, Big Dreams) by Sanchez Vegara

September 19, 2023 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Hedy Lamarr (Little People, Big Dreams) by Sanchez Vegara, Maria Isable and Maggie Cole tells the story of this world-renowned actress and scientist. Aimed at a younger audience, some of her life would not be completely appropriate for the traditional picture book listener and/or reader (she was married to an arms dealer and he was cruel to her). Yet, it is handled well and with an adult, you can explain easily enough. But of course, know your audience. However, with Laverne Cox (Little People, Big Dreams) by […]
