Queer Heroes: Meet 53 LGBTQ Heroes From Past and Present! by Arabelle Sicardi

March 26, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Over 50 famous and maybe not as famous people of the GLBTQ+ community are in the pages of the book Queer Heroes: Meet 53 LGBTQ Heroes From Past and Present!  While I did not count, I would guess at least half or more of the people mentioned are not mainstream (but known in certain circles) or might be the first time the reader (and most) have heard of/about them. Of course there were several more well known (Freddie Mercury, Ellen DeGeneres, David Bowie (who never […]

Different person, same love

Every Day: The Graphic Novel by David Levithan

March 22, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When you’ve worked in kids and young adult books as long as I have, you learn some “big names” of the biz. One I knew I never had to read (but probably should because they were good) was David Levithan. I recommended them on repetition alone. Therefore, when the opportunity came to read Every Day: The Graphic Novel I knew the Reading Gods were telling me to go for it. First, a graphic novel (a favorite reading genre for several years now) and second, David […]

Light and dark fantasy

Coral’s Reef volume one by David Lumsdon

Castle Swimmer volume one by Wendy Martin

March 21, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I do not know if the (online reader copy) Coral’s Reef volume one by David Lumsdon and Shiei was originally a webcomic, but I know Castle Swimmer volume one by Wendy Martin was. Why I say this is because the two books have some similarities and of course, differences. But they make me think of each other. I read Coral via an online reader copy as said, but read at least volume one on WebToons for Castle. However, it is now going to be in […]

Taking on the role of Isaac

Buzzing by Samuel Sattin

March 21, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Buzzing is more of a 3.5 as an averaged out score than either a 3 or a 4.  I enjoyed seeing the changes in the illustrations to show the emotions, feelings, and how our main character is reacting. This is clever and a unique way of helping us see the situation. However, I never felt any one character was overly fleshed out and none felt “real” and more of a bit of a cliché. At the same time there are a lot of good pieces […]

Your interviews into a graphic novel

Dear Body by Lea Bordier

March 7, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Sometimes working around books is a drawback. Oh sure, I’ve access to almost any book I want, but then again, I have access to almost any book I want! The riches overflow and I keep finding “one more” to look at/read. Due to this, I kept pushing Dear Body by Lea Bordier (with 12 female and non-binary illustrators) aside. Finally, one day I happened to look over at the saddest spot in our store: our return cart. Sometimes it’s necessary to return a book to […]

The balance of your magic

Shakti by SJ Sindu

March 6, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Shakti is a terribly cute, modern story (several GLBTQ characters and diverse people) but does not dwell on the diversity, but the story of how Shakti herself starts coming of age. This is probably my favorite part as Shakti is representing differences while making it relatable to everyone who reads. Even to the adult-kid-at-heart who is writing this review. SJ Sindu’s book was not an “OMG BEST BOOK EVER!” book, but I liked it and glad I read it now and not when it first […]
