How to be Ace? Anyway you want to!

How to Be Ace: A Memoir of Growing Up Asexual by Rebecca Burgess

November 4, 2020 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

I am not sure what I expected from How to Be Ace: A Memoir of Growing Up Asexual by Rebecca Burgess, but this was not it. There is some repetition with the authors feeling and actions (they mention more than once that they “might grow into wanting to have sex” or “it’s something that once happens will feel right.”  They also repeat saying how it is uncomfortable with touching people/being touched and repeated mentions of their social anxiety. I think I was looking for more of […]

A mistaken identity that leads to ones true identity

Ana on the Edge by A. J. Sass

October 30, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When I saw that I could request a reader copy of Ana on the Edge by A. J. Sass, I figured, “Why not?” As worse case would be I do not like the story and passed it onto a coworker who might.  Lunch reading was slow going, so I decided to take it home and try and give it a longer at a time reading stretch. Unfortunately, that did not work out, as I needed to excuse myself for a two-day hospital stay. I did […]

Super bad. Super funny. Super (embarrassingly) relatable.

School for Extraterrestrial girls V01 1 Girl on Fire by Jeremy Whitley

September 30, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

School for Extraterrestrial girls V01 1 Girl on Fire is one of the most amazingly bad and wonderful books I have read in a while. Jeremy Whitley has included all the clichés of high school drama (best friends fighting, not fitting in, being cruel to another (even accidently), roommate issues, protesting “the man” with not-so-subtle rebellions acts, girls on fire, snooty classmates and an almost lovers feud). And it is all tied up in a book about alien girls living on Earth. You will find […]

My journey was different, but I can relate

The Times I Knew I Was Gay by Eleanor Crewes

September 9, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

#cbr12bingo Shelfie The Times I Knew I Was Gay is less of a coming out story and more of a “coming into yourself” story. Eleanor Crewes does not do a “deep dive” into their journey to finding their true self but all the important parts, events, feelings and people are there. These highlights create a feeling that you are reading a diary or watching a movie that Crewes is narrating. Crewes comes out to themselves (and to family and friends) several times before they finally […]

A semi-autobiographical debut novel that opens up a world

Like Vanessa by Tami Charles

September 9, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Like Vanessa is a sweet and realistic story of liking yourself, while finding your home, family and who you truly are. Tami Charles bases her character Vanessa on some of her own experiences making this an interesting combination of fact, fiction, history and contemporary issues. In 1983 Vanessa is a dark-skinned girl living in the inner city. Vanessa, her cousin, her beloved grandfather Pop-Pop and her father live in a small apartment. But they could not be farther apart if they live in a mansion. […]

Fat Girl Finishing School by Rachel Wiley

September 9, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

#cbr11bingo #TwoHeadsareBetterThanOne Fat Girl Finishing School by Rachel Wiley came before the poetry collection, Nothing is Okay. And I am glad that I read that one first, as Fat Girl, in several ways, was not as strong. As much as I love Wiley, the themes are consistent, therefore, you know they style after reading (or listening) a handful of poems. That is not to say they are all not amazing, they are. Wiley knows how to twist a phrase around on itself and punch you. […]
