A new Alphabet

From Archie to Zack by Vincent Kirsch

August 19, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

From Archie to Zack is a GLBTQ+ story and a sweet friendship story. You can say that Archie and Zack do have a crush on each other (as a description mentioned the joys of a first crush) or they are just dear, close friends, who care deeply for each other. This flexibility normalizes feelings and boys having them. It is also about acceptance as the whole school knows that the boys have this relationship. And when Zelda, Zinnia, and Zuzella find letters that Archie has […]

Please note you have seen this author before, just under different names. But know that they still love their minions who read their novels.

Into the Real by Z Brewer

August 4, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr13bingo They/She/He Into the Real fits the They/She/He category on at least two levels. First, Z Brewer goes by they/them. They have had a journey of self-discovery since their Vladimir Todd series days to this most recent novel. (I am currently reading another book by them that came before this with another name).  And due to the main character, Quinn, taking a journeying to find their own gender identity, eventually learning the word genderqueer, also allows it to fit this category. When Quinn finds themselves bouncing […]

Okay, it is a lot cheesy, but also a cute love story

Autoboyography by Christina Lauren

June 29, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Note: all images shamelessly stolen from the internet as I really got into the Simon & Schuster free online books this month.   I was on the fence about Autoboyography by Christina Lauren (or Christina Hobbs and Lauren Billings). I was not sure I was reading for another GLBTQ book so soon after the others I had read, and frankly thought the cover too cute. And when I got into the book, the “meet cute” romance tone of the story explained the cover. And yes, […]

A book I asked, “Why that was there?” (A lot.) But learned as I read.

When We Were Magic by Sarah Gailey

June 25, 2021 by BlackRaven 2 Comments

When I first looked at When We Were Magic by Sarah Gailey, I immediately put it down again. I was not in the mood for witches, teen girl drama or magic. But when I found it sometime later, I thought, oh why not? Not like I had to finish. Yet, I would go onto finish, even with misgivings. There is a slow beginning to this teen novel. In fact, the whole pace of the story can be slow with a rushed and mostly incomplete, unsatisfying […]

Take a Trip

Grandad’s Camper by Harry Woodgate

June 23, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I use the phrase “cozy read” a lot, but Grandad’s Camper by Harry Woodgate is a cozy read. Even if it is not always a happy read. You could substitute any gender of the two grandfathers of the story, and you have “this” story, as the loss of a spouse or partner is universal. Everyone will grieve, everyone will remember the connections they had. I enjoyed how everything is just “normalized” and not “in your face” about the subject. The two grandfathers of the child […]

Move over RuPaul there are new queens (and kings) in town

Kings, Queens and In-Betweens by Tanya Boteiu

June 16, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I read two radically different books this weekend. The first was Kings, Queens and In-Betweens by Tanya Boteiu and the second, Saving Winslow by Sharon Creech. If you know Sharon Creech, even her “edgy books” are tame. Especially tame compared to drag queens and kings. And there are kings, queens, and in-betweens galore in the book of the same name. Boteiu has characters that flow naturally even if some of them tend to be a bit of a cliché. But it works. This is a book […]
