The one where the crazy woman is better written than the crazy woman from Tampa

August 13, 2014 by Lynn 1 Comment

So it turns out that a) I forgot to post some links, and b) I’m crappy at writing reviews. But with the start of the school year (where the hell did summer go?), maybe I’ll get my act together. It’s impossible to review this book without spoilers, but since I think I’m the last person on Earth to read this, I’m not too worried I’m going to upset anyone. Either way, fair warning: spoilers ahead. Told in alternate voices, a technique I’m not a huge […]

I’m a nice man.

Rogues was my second George R.R. Martin/Gardner Dozois themed anthology in less than six months, and I’m happy to say I enjoyed it more overall than their previous effort, Dangerous Women. (I will pick up Warriors eventually. Maybe next year. I’m soooo done with anthologies for now.) And I’m sad to say, especially for how good Martin is at writing lady characters, I really think the main difference is that a lot of genre writers (including women!) just could not fathom how to write a […]

Gone Girl

May 27, 2014 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

“Something bad was about to happen. My wife was being clever again.” “Page Turner” is the most accurate description I can come up with- it took me almost two weeks to finish Never Let Me Go and only two days to finish Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl (which is about 100 pages longer). I realize I’m late to the discusion, Gone Girl seemed to populate the internet all of last year and has been officially cast by Hollywood for an October release. I wonder if my […]

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

April 16, 2014 by badkittyuno 2 Comments

“We weren’t ourselves when we fell in love, and when we became ourselves – surprise! – we were poison. We complete each other in the nastiest, ugliest possible way.”  A lot of the reviews I read about Gone Girl boiled down to: this book was really well written but I still hated everything about it. I can see that. Nick and Amy, the married main characters of the story, are both horrible, despicable people. Really. I’ve rarely hated a character as much as I hated these two. Amy Dunne […]

A Beautifully Damning Nightmare

March 8, 2014 by Doctor Controversy 3 Comments

Fear is one of the most powerful emotions of the human psyche. It crashes our systems, lowers our defenses, and makes us act irrationally – all in the hopes that everything will turn back to normal, and the puzzle that is our fear will be solved into security. If someone can tap into this basest of emotions within us, we either praise them (when they do so for entertainment) or damn them (when they do so for our own suffering). I’ve experienced both, and now […]
