Are You Afraid of the Dark?

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark by Alvin Schwartz

October 9, 2019 by lumenatrix Leave a Comment

Double Bingo! (2nd Row Down, Third Across- in Red… Blood Red… Mwahahaha) OK, I loved these books in school, loooovvved them. I must have read all three 5 or six times each. So, for the Back to School Square I decided to give the first one a re-read when I found it in my local used book store. This book gets four stars because it is a really good collection of American folk lore, shoot, it gets one whole star from me just for the […]

What Rose Marshall Is Up to When She’s Not Playing a Price Aunt

Sparrow Hill Road by Seanan McGuire

August 24, 2019 by Jen K Leave a Comment

Out-of-body experiences would come in handy in a prison

I enjoyed this very much, but I think I hold Carey to higher standards, so it didn’t wow me completely. The Girl With All the Gifts was tremendous, and The Boy on the Bridge was great, and I looooove Felix Castor, so while Fellside was very good as a book on its own, it wasn’t quite what I was hoping for from a Mike Carey Book. Jess Moulson is a heroin addict with a crummy boyfriend. While in a drugged stupor one night, their apartment […]

Ghost Stories on a Tatami Mat

March 7, 2014 by Fofo Leave a Comment

Target: Miyabe Miyuki’s Apparitions: Ghosts of Old Edo.  Translated by Daniel Huddleston Profile: Horror, Ghost Stories Japanese horror ranges pretty heavily from mild ghost stories to some incredibly creepy and dehumanizing body horror. Apparitions fortunately falls into the former citatory, chronicling a series of stories that walk a fine line between scary and sentimental.  These tales capitalize on the cornerstone of Japanese spirituality: that every object and creature is imbued with a sprit.  At their core, these stories are more cautionary tales, advising the listener to act with honor […]
