I lean towards Little Ghost

Little Ghost House Hunts by Lucy Branam

All Hallows' Eve by Anthony DeStefano

August 26, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

If you are new here, or to my reviews, let me tell you: I like Halloween. However, I do not like the spooky or horror or gross, but the fun, candy getting, costume wearing part. I also like reading Halloween books, especially for kids. The novel The Halloween Tree has some great moments for the 10 to adult reader, but there is nothing like a picture book. And recently, I found two picture books (read on line, currently available) that are very different from each […]

What would you do for your sister?

A Friend for Lucy by Jen-Ai Elena Molineaux

August 20, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When I started to write this review, I had eaten too much sugar. I was on a bit of a sugar-high-buzz that was making me a bit too “up” and slightly feeling off. So, I was nervous this book would be too sweetly reviewed or I would maybe dwell too much on how sweet it was. After all, A Friend for Lucy by Jen-Ai Elena Molineaux is a sweet book. It is also a clever story of friendship between different generations and how family can […]

I almost used this for red, but things are not always greener (grass) on the other side of this friendship

The Slightly Spooky Tale of Fox and Mole by Cecilia Heikkila

July 28, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Cbr17bingo Green While the title of The Slightly Spooky Tale of Fox and Mole (as did promotional material) does say slightly spooky, I felt it was spooky and one should drop the slightly! However, it is not necessarily over the top so most ages at least five and up could read and the adult reader will understand the metaphor of friendship and selfishness, plus anger about being taken advantage of. Cecilia Heikkila’s clever text and illustrations make for loveable characters (even if Mole is a […]

He’s Grumpy. He’s a Ghost.

The Grumpy Ghost Upstairs by Mamiko Shiotani

July 2, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Online reader copies are all the rage right now, it is environmental and quick and easy to receive. Of course, I sometimes have a hard time reading books from them, but The Grumpy Ghost Upstairs by Mamiko Shiotani and translated by Polly Lawson was an exception. I tend to be able to read picture books online as there is less text and more space to enjoy the overall work. This was especially true with Shiotani’s book. The illustrations and text was Goldilocks/Baby Bear just right. […]

Two and a half cigarette men!

The Sundown Motel by Simone St. James

April 25, 2025 by Singsonggirl Leave a Comment

I saw this recommended on reddit, bought it on audible and literally the next day zirza panned it on here. Sadly, zirza was right, it’s not great. A cross between a mystery and a ghost story, The Sundown Motel tells the story of nefarious things happening in the small town of Fell, NY, where Viv Delaney disappears after her night shift at the titular motel in the 80s, while her niece Carly investigates the case in 2017. The POV switches between these two women and […]

Ghosts and Halloween are nothing to fear, but what about another holiday cheer?

The Little Ghost Who Was a Quilt by Riel Nason and Byron Eggenschwiler

The Little Ghost Quilt's Winter Surprise by Riel Nason and Byron Eggenschwiler

January 8, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

In 2020 The Little Ghost Who Was a Quilt was published. And according to its publisher description, it became an instant Halloween classic. In July 2025 a new gift edition will be published. I am not sure how this differs from the original as I read this as an online reader copy. But regardless of the extras it might have, it will still be the same sweet book about being yourself and the adventures you will have because of it.  The story is sweet and […]
