Fire & Blood: Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah…

Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin

I loved Game of Thrones from its very first episode. I was as shocked as any non-reader of the series at its Psycho-like twist in its penultimate first season episode. As soon as I could I grabbed a copy of the first novel. I read the rest and watched the series rush to its inevitable conclusion. I wasn’t as put off as some folks by plot turns that I felt I had seen coming, or at least had been hinted at as very possible outcomes. […]

Targaryen History 101

Fire & Blood by George R. R. Martin

September 10, 2019 by lowercasesee 2 Comments

Look, I am ride or die A Song of Ice and Fire fan and not even what is effectively the equivalent of a Westerosi history textbook can stop me. Plus so much of what I love about the series is the depth of the lore and the attention to detail and the inner workings of a complex society so this was actually pretty much my happy place, once I learned to tell the players apart. There are multiple Aegons alive at the same time, it gets […]

I am a purist

A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin

A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin

A Storm of Swords by George R. R. Martin

A Feast for Crows by George R. R. Martin

A Dance with Dragons by George R. R. Martin

Is it fair to do a single review for all five A Song of Ice and Fire novels? Probably not, but I reread the series basically as a single unit and can no longer tell what happened in which book, so here we go. I love these books – yes, all five. Yes, that includes A Feast for Crows – and am a staunch better-than-the-show purist. I get really annoying about it and my fiance has just learned to smile and nod and ever since I […]

I know it means he’s not working on Winds of Winter

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms by George R. R. Martin

June 17, 2019 by lowercasesee 3 Comments

…I don’t care because I will take whatever A Song of Ice and Fire I can get. Even if it’s the side adventures of Dunk and Egg. Maybe especially if. No. I still want WoW more. But these help hold me over. I’m in the home stretch of my ASoIaF re-read and somehow had only ever read one of the side novels so I was absolutely delighted to get A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms in from the library (the wait for Fire & Blood is quite a bit longer). […]

G.O.(A).T

A Game of Thrones by George R.R. Martin

May 30, 2019 by Jake 2 Comments

I decided to revisit the GRRM classic after the show ended. I’ve been in a prolonged reading slump due in part to stuff going on in my private life and it’s been difficult to focus on anything new. My personal library is littered with books I lost interest in 10%, 30% and one 50%. Familiarity always helps me break out of slumps and I figured that would be the case here.    I was not disappointed. The book isn’t just as great as I remember…it’s […]

Probably one for hard-core fans only.

Fire & Blood by George R. R. Martin

May 20, 2019 by Carriejay 4 Comments

Before Game of Thrones there was the age of the Targaryens, the only family of Dragonlords to survive the Doom of Valyria. And so they came to Westeros to rule. But before they could be kings and queens Aegon the Conqueror had to destroy those who stood against him. With his legendary sisters and their dragons against them the lords of Westeros bent their knees. This history recounts his reign and on through Maegor the Cruel to the civil war known as the Dance of […]
