Holiday Book Exchange!

December 6, 2018 by ElCicco 2 Comments

Thank you, Bonnie!! I’m looking forward to reading some poetry (for the first time in a long time) over the holidays. And a classic! Middlemarch! Thank you so much!

A classic that deserves the honor

May 16, 2017 by alwaysanswerb 8 Comments

Okay, so. Will it amuse you if I admit that I somehow did not know that this book is famously long? I’m over here trying to do these reading challenges and had finished my last audiobook, and so saw that this was available on Overdrive and thought “Neat! I’ll just slot that one right in there.” When I saw that the audiobook was over thirty hours long, I realized my mistake. Anyway, man. What an undertaking to read, and now, an undertaking to review. I […]

Silas Marner Gets the Lifetime Movie Treatment

January 14, 2015 by ElCicco 2 Comments

This novel was, apparently, a New York Times bestseller. I don’t recall reading any reviews of it, but I’m guessing it was a big hit with folks looking for something easy to take to the beach or on long plane rides. The funny thing is, it’s exactly the type of book the main character hates. AJ Fikry is an over-educated 40-ish widower who owns a bookstore on Alice Island, which is near Nantucket. He is grumpy and has very exacting tastes in literature, preferring short […]

George Eliot is a Ravenclaw. For Realz.

November 22, 2014 by bonnie 3 Comments

It took me two months to listen to Middlemarch via audiobook, but I did it! It’s one of my all-time favorite novels, and it’s been years since I read it. Spoiler: it did not disappoint. Since it’s a classic novel and probably read widely, I thought it might be fun to do something kind of different. So, without further ado: what if the Middlemarchers went to Hogwarts? Here is how the Sorting Hat would sort some of the major characters: Tertius Lydgate: Tertius is a […]

The Joys of Middlemarch

August 29, 2014 by bonnie Leave a Comment

Next to Jane Austen, I love no author and works better than those of George Eliot’s. I have often been teased or side-eyed, especially when I lead in with Silas Marner. What can I say? It’s easy to love Silas when he’s played by a Jack Russell terrier in a pint-sized costume: Stay gold, Ponybone. Wishbone introduced me to Silas Marner in eighth grade, and then I read and fell in love with Middlemarch in college. I briefly declared it my favorite novel above Pride […]

Catching up on the classics: Silas Marner

June 2, 2014 by Fiat.Luxury Leave a Comment

I always find it hard to rate and review classics.  Usually they’re classics for a reason, I usually enjoy them just fine, and at the very least I appreciate them.  Earlier in the year I read Middlemarch, which was wonderful and long, and I thought I should expand my Eliot horizons. Silas Marner is much shorter than Middlemarch, and a much easier read.  You probably know the basics: old, miserly bachelor happens to become the caretaker of an orphan, who teaches him the True Meaning […]
