I’ve read all of Gene Luen Yang’s comics, so it was a no-brainer that I would be reading his version of Superman. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy it. Oh, man. I love that these comics exist, and are an official continuation of the story. Avatar: The Last Airbender is my comfort food. I watch it when I’m sick and it’s so happy and lovely and colorful. And look, I know it’s a kid’s show, but UGH IT’S SO GOOD. I’m a bit ashamed to admit that my only knowledge of the Boxer Rebellion before reading these books came from those crossover episodes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel where Angel, Darla, Spike & Drusilla are taking advantage of the carnage of the Rebellion, and Spike ends up killing a Slayer (“Fool For Love” and “Darla,” in case you’re feeling like a rewatch).
