When the Bully is the Hero, the Girl is in love with a God and there are spaceships up your nose.

Animal Crackers by Gene Luen Yang

January 28, 2021 by BlackRaven 12 Comments

Gene Luen Yang can write the instructions to how to make a sandwich and I would read it. That does not mean I will love it, but I will always appreciate it. And Animal Crackers is in that category. I was not jumping up and down about it, and even with a second reading (although a bit of a quick one) and being able to put together a few more pieces I missed the first time, I still did not love this graphic novel. This […]

If you want to know what happened after the last season of Avatar: The Lat Airbender

Avatar: The Last Airbender The Promise by Gene Luen Yang

Avatar: The Last Airbender The Search by Gene Luen Yang

If you have not seen the Avatar: The Last Airbender television series, these books might not be something you want to start with. However, I recommend watching it even though I know it was aimed at kids. There are sophisticated themes that at the time were coming to light, and we’re still dealing with today, that will engage the adult viewer. I admit I was a skeptic at first, but the humor and depth of the story pulled me in. And seriously who wouldn’t fall […]

Superman Smashes the Klan by Gene Luen Yang

October 15, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

This was good and I liked it, but I didn’t expect it to be so young-skewing. It’s definitely a middle grade book. Older teenagers and adults can read and enjoy it, but it’s not really an all-ages read. Aside from that, it was really well done. I went into this with no background, and it was a fun read that way, but I wish I would have read the historical context/afterword from Yang at the back of the book first. Better yet, I wish they […]

Avatar The Last Airbender: The Rift by Gene Luen Yang

July 30, 2020 by Mobius_Walker Leave a Comment

Avatar Aang, in the midst of a celebration of the first jointly governed colony, is beset by visions of one of his former lives, Avatar Yangchen, the last air bender avatar before Aang. The visions remind Aang that it is time for Yangchen’s festival, so everyone’s favorite friend group sets off: Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, and the Air Acolytes fly to a pristine to cliff to honor a giant statue of an unknown woman. Tensions rise almost immediately between Aang and Toph. Aang encourages valuing […]

A marvelous extension of an already incredible, established universe

Avatar The Last Airbender: The Promise by Gene Luen Yang

July 27, 2020 by Mobius_Walker Leave a Comment

I am very lucky that I have adult friends who are nerds in the same way that I am. A friend of mine recently let me borrow all 5 complete collections of the Avatar graphic novels. This review is of the first one. Avatar the Last Airbender: The Promise picks immediately following the events of the three seasons of the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. Avatar Aang and newly crowned Fire Lord Zuko must find away to heal the world of the damage that […]

I’d probably read the phone book if Gene Luen Yang wrote it

Superman Smashes the Klan by Gene Luen Yang

June 22, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When Gene Luen Yang first started creating graphic novels, I wonder if he thought, “Someday I going to write one that has Superman fighting the Klan that is based on the 1940’s radio program.” And in 2020 out comes Superman Smashes the Klan with its connection to that past and all too relevance today. While this is not my favorite Yang graphic novel (mostly because, while I like Superman, he is not my favorite DC character and honestly have less interest in his stories), it […]
