Raise the curtain

Upstaged by Robin Easter

April 30, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have read a lot of middle reader novels and a lot of graphic novel middle readers. I have read a lot of stories that deal with LGBTQ issues. And of course, most (if not all) have dealt with growing up, coming of age, finding yourself and situations like those. Therefore, it takes a lot for me to really love a book with the above criteria. And while I liked and enjoyed Upstaged by Robin Easter, I did not love it.  However, I did like […]

I finally read Gender Queer!

Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe

April 8, 2025 by cosbrarian 2 Comments

I’m sure this book has already been discoursed to death here at Cannonball Read, so I won’t get too much into that. (It was a book club pick, yes?) I finally decided to read it because I have been much more active in my local anti-censorship organization this year, and wanted to be able to better defend the book if someone came after me with questions about it. The book is so stunning, warm, and earnest. It’s the most thorough exploration of this specific form […]

Fabulous sci-fi saving the world

The Ultra-Fabulous Glitter Squadron Save the World Again by A.C. Wise

December 30, 2022 by persnickety chick 1 Comment

This was a fun read, but hard to describe.  So i took a look at the publisher and this is a book suggested  when one chooses “I want to read something that’s genderqueer…” .  And that is fair. This is a collection of stories and vignettes about how each of the members of the ultra-fabulous glitter squadron came to be part of the group and some of the challenges they have faced.  While it is a collection of stories, they do lead to a finale […]

Please note you have seen this author before, just under different names. But know that they still love their minions who read their novels.

Into the Real by Z Brewer

August 4, 2021 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr13bingo They/She/He Into the Real fits the They/She/He category on at least two levels. First, Z Brewer goes by they/them. They have had a journey of self-discovery since their Vladimir Todd series days to this most recent novel. (I am currently reading another book by them that came before this with another name).  And due to the main character, Quinn, taking a journeying to find their own gender identity, eventually learning the word genderqueer, also allows it to fit this category. When Quinn finds themselves bouncing […]

“Between the ocean and the mountains is a wild forest. That is where I want to make my home.” (CBR11 Bingo)

Gender Queer: a Memoir by Maia Kobabe

July 21, 2019 by faintingviolet 2 Comments

Back in March Emmalita read and reviewed Gender Queer: a Memoir by Maia Kobabe and it put this book onto my radar where it previously hadn’t been. I had been quietly on the lookout for Cannonballer reviews of books by or about non-binary people to help fulfill a Read Harder challenge, and while I have only read a few books by transgender authors (that I’m aware of) I had likely read none by non-binary authors (I may have, I’ve not been great about tracking that […]

Between the Oceans and the Mountains is a Wild Forest.

Gender Queer: a Memoir by Maia Kobabe

March 8, 2019 by Emmalita 3 Comments

Note: I misgendered the author in the 4th paragraph. I’d love to blame autocorrect, but it was entirely my own brain defaulting to the comfort of binary pronouns. Brains like to be comfortable and I was raised in an aggressively binary culture. That makes it more imperative that I get comfortable with discomfort, try harder, and be willing to correct others and accept correction. Maia Kobabe’s graphic novel GenderQueer: A Memoir is a beautiful gift to the world, filled with pain and compassion. Maia uses […]
