I finally read Gender Queer!

Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe

April 8, 2025 by cosbrarian 2 Comments

I’m sure this book has already been discoursed to death here at Cannonball Read, so I won’t get too much into that. (It was a book club pick, yes?) I finally decided to read it because I have been much more active in my local anti-censorship organization this year, and wanted to be able to better defend the book if someone came after me with questions about it. The book is so stunning, warm, and earnest. It’s the most thorough exploration of this specific form […]

Self discovery and gender with a little musical accompaniment

A Song for You and I by K. O'Neill

January 14, 2025 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I always enjoy K. O’Neill’s writing, however, I found A Song for You and I a smidgen not as strong as usual. I think the issue was I was reading via an online reader copy and there were black and white images and not the full color illustrations of the final product. And since the book relies on the illustrations for most of the story, it was not what I needed. However, the story of being “other” and the fear and confusion that produces is […]

Just an ordinary non-binary trans teen

Ciel in All Directions by Sophie Labelle

September 24, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I have been a fan of Sophie Labelle’s comic, Assigned Male, off and on for years. Therefore, when I saw they had books for them, I was excited and picked a few up. They are a great way to read (if not all the series) the best of the series. When I realized they had “spin off” books as well, I looked into them. In 2020 and 2021 Ciel, the non-binary pre-teen/teen of Assigned Male, was given at least two books of their own. I […]

Bowing down to pressure

Camp Prodigy by Caroline Palmer

March 6, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

What do you do when you’ve a two week vacation and you’re tired of playing games on your phone? You find the stack of books you have and start reading. And one of those books was Camp Prodigy by Caroline Palmer.   I’ll start with that it is a fun, modern coming of age story that deals with GLBTQ issues and the pressures we put on ourselves versus just “having fun” when we are doing things that we should/could enjoy.  I will then go on to […]

CBR15 Bingo: Picture This

Gender Queer: A Memoir by Maia Kokabe

August 4, 2023 by Malin 1 Comment

CBR15 Bingo: Picture This (can also be used for Queer Lives) Official book description: In 2014, Maia Kobabe, who uses e/em/eir pronouns, thought that a comic of reading statistics would be the last autobiographical comic e would ever write. At the time, it was the only thing e felt comfortable with strangers knowing about em. Now, Gender Queer is here. Maia’s intensely cathartic autobiography charts eir journey of self-identity, which includes the mortification and confusion of adolescent crushes, grappling with how to come out to […]
