My Prediction/Request Came True!

Competence by Gail Carriger

August 2, 2019 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo 11 (Travel) I waited until almost the next book in the series release to read Imprudence, the prequel to Competence. I waited until almost the next book in the series release to read Competence because I hadn’t enjoyed Imprudence as much as previous novels by Gail Carriger. In my review of Imprudence I remember stating that I wished that the next novel wouldn’t focus on Rue because she’d started to annoy me. Ms. Carriger seems to have heard my plea (because of course she […]

Sophronia and her series both Finish.

Manners & Mutiny (Finishing School, #4) by Gail Carriger

April 25, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

This was a nice ending to the series, pretty on par with the quality of the rest of the books, so if you liked those, you’ll like this one, too. I’ve just been slightly underwhelmed with this series as a whole, so I was just slightly underwhelmed with this book in the same way. I got really excited about the ending of the third book, but she didn’t really take it anywhere super exciting, just medium exciting. I did like the last two books more […]

“I want a man who stays out of my way.”

Waistcoats & Weaponry (Finishing School, #3) by Gail Carriger

February 11, 2019 by narfna Leave a Comment

All right, I liked this one quite a bit. I’m invested in the series now. But I’m still only giving this 3.5 stars, rounded up, because it shouldn’t take you two books to be emotionally invested. I should have been in like Flynn after book one. Anyway, I finished this book in a frenzy and immediately wanted the next one (which I’m not getting to until next month, sadface), so that’s a great sign. Sophronia and Co. are halfway through their second year at Madame Geraldine’s Finishing […]

“It’s no good choosing your first husband from a school for evil geniuses. Much too difficult to kill.”

This book! This is why Goodreads need to give us half stars. This is not a three star book! Three stars, for me, is like, okay I guess I liked it, grudgingly. Or maybe I liked it but there something fundamentally wrong with it. Or maybe it’s really well written but it’s just not my thing. And four stars is: I liked it a lot and it was great! Nothing to complain about, but not my favorite, would read again. And this book fits into […]

A novel of peculiar incidents and unruly dissidents.

August 6, 2018 by Leedock 4 Comments

Book three of  Carriger’s Custard Protocol series does not disappoint. I know that this author is much discussed in the CBRosphere, so no doubt some of you are already reading this or have it waiting in the wings. For those of you who have not discovered her books yet,  immediately begin with these.  I read  my first of her books during CBR3 and described them as “If Jane Austen lived in Victorian England and was getting properly shagged on a regular basis, this is what she […]

Werewolves in Love

January 28, 2018 by faintingviolet 3 Comments

In some ways my CBR history is the history of my reading Gail Carriger books. The third book I ever reviewed for Cannonball was Carriger’s Soulless. Heck, it and the next three books in the Parasol Protectorate series make four of my first 10 reviews. Carriger showed back up in my reading in CBR6 as I started her Finishing School books (a prequel series) which spread out over Cannonballs 7 & 8. I am a big Carriger fan; I enjoy her online presence, and find […]
