CBR15 Bingo: North America

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

October 8, 2023 by Malin Leave a Comment

CBR15 Bingo: North America I’ve been hearing about this book since it came out. So many people I know on the internet and whose opinions I trust have read, reviewed and absolutely loved it. So I feel bad only rating it four stars, but for all that that the story and the characters appealed to me, there was something that kept making me prioritise other things over listening more to the audio book, and I never really fully emotionally connected with this one. There are […]

“To allow yourself to play with another person is no small risk.”

Bingo: North America I’m in a few other book-related groups, and whenever this book comes up as a suggestion, there is often a great deal of angst about the setting, in the world of gaming.  It’s as if somehow the main characters meeting and bonding through a love of video games and going on to build a gaming company together will make for a novel that is impenetrable for those who aren’t into gaming, or maybe it’s a form of intellectual snobbery, as if something […]

“You try again. You fail better.”

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow (2022) by Gabrielle Zevin is not a book I would have picked out on my own. I’m not particularly interested in video games, and the cover doesn’t really call to me. Even the description doesn’t suck me in. What drove me to pick up the book, however, were the many people who had Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow on their Cannonball best books list last year. I simply could not ignore such overwhelming praise. I like to say that if a teacher is […]

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

September 5, 2023 by Caesar's Wife Leave a Comment

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow is, at its heart, a story of friendship. Friendship is having a bit of a ‘moment’ right now in pop culture. I’ve read countless articles and stories lately focussed on friendship – in particular, the fallout  when it goes sour. Ghosting of friends, friendship fights, friendship betrayals, friendship breakups… It’s something of an epidemic at the moment and seems to be a real theme in my circles. Perhaps it’s just this phase of my life.. the 30s, when people are […]

“This is what time travel is. It’s looking at a person, and seeing them in the present and the past, concurrently. And that mode of transport only worked with those one had known a significant time.”

CBR Bingo – Hold Steady I don’t know what I thought this book was going to be, but this novel exceeded all of my expectations. Someone who recommended it to me said she could have read 200 more pages and I agree. 300 even. 400! IT WAS SO GOOD. I wanted to follow the characters forever and ever. Weepy Warning – this book brought me to tears, to be clear, I was full-on sobbing to the point that my husband was concerned about me. This […]

“What is a storm? It is water and it is light and it is wind.”

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

April 25, 2023 by Nart 3 Comments

From the author of the Storied Life of AJ Firky, another multi-decade spanning quiet story of lonely people trying to find family and community with mixed results. Plot: Sam was in a car accident that killed his mother and landed him in the hospital with a fractured foot. He hasn’t spoken a word in six weeks when Sadie, who was visiting a family member, walks into the quasi-living room in the hospital where he’s playing video games and asks to play. He lets her. Then […]
