Life is too short for all these tomorrows

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

April 17, 2025 by bjornsnipe Leave a Comment

Having read this book I now understand how people felt in BtVs when they said “I’d rather have a railroad spike through my head than listen to that awful stuff!” I’d rather have railroad spikes or hot pokers shoved into my eyes rather than have to read this book again. The author seems to have read the old saying “that if you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit:, only I’m afraid he believes he’s brilliant. I know he writes as if he […]

All our yesterdays

Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

February 19, 2025 by NatalieH Leave a Comment

So, I’ve been travelling recently, and on Monday was stuck waiting for a flight in Miami airport for about 9 hours. I’d ran out of physical books to read, my devices were low on power, and I couldn’t find an outlet anywhere, so naturally, I headed to the books section of the nearest airport convenience store in search of entertainment (or at the very least, a mildly interesting distraction). Predictably, the selection was small (I don’t think I’ve ever seen a James Patterson novel outside […]

actually a bit of christmas-y schmaltz

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin

A recommendation from Britt! Via Book Group’s year-end book swap, where amusingly enough I didn’t actually pick this up (and no one picked up The New Enclosure: The Appropriation of Public Land in Neoliberal Britain would you believe???) Okay like, is this schmaltz? Yes. Is this very pat and full of plot threads so neatly tied up you’d roll your eyes if someone insisted it’s a true story? Yes. Does this have a bit of a twist that isn’t foreshadowed on the jacket and might entirely throw […]

Taking a chance can pay off

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin

There’s a part of me – a big part of me – that loves hunting through discount tables and used book stores, looking for treasures long abandoned by people unknown, or those never discovered and left to be sold for bargain prices. But there’s another part of me that is saddened by the amazing things people pour their heart into that never get discovered, and are left to be found by people willing to gamble a few dollars on forgotten and unwanted books. The Storied […]

I Guess I Haven’t Grown Out of Liking Obnoxious Blokes

Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin

March 31, 2024 by thegirlwhogotoverit Leave a Comment

I picked this up based on a yearly book round up chat at Go Fug Yourself – Fug Nationals can generally be relied upon for compelling recommendations. Honestly I’ve started writing this not knowing exactly how to say what I want to say about this one.  I’ve had a quick look around and it looks like I’m late to this party, so let’s do this with spoilers, so I can be a bit more specific. I found it compulsively readable, and knocked it over in […]
