Riders of the Brohirrim, Ms. Marvel is Our Hero.

December 29, 2017 by Emmalita 1 Comment

I have professed my deep and abiding love for Kamala Khan as Ms. Marvel before. Volumes 7 and 8 are why we read comic books. These volumes are what we’ve been growing towards. These are the issues in which Kamala faces the evils in our society, the ones that can’t be entirely super heroed away. This is the dark third act when it looks like everything is lost. After the events during Civil War, Ms. Marvel is on her own and no longer universally loved […]

Change is What You Make of It.

I adore Kamala Khan, Ms. Marvel. I am so glad that G. Willow Wilson is writing her. I’m so happy this all exists. Kamala has come a long way from her exposure to the Terrigen mist and that first fan girly team up with Wolverine. Some members of her family know, she’s a member of the Avengers, and Jersey City has come to view her as their own superhero. But success and notoriety come with a price. Reputations can be changed with just a whisper, […]

Kamala says be kind.

Volume seven and still going strong. I almost feel like I should knock on wood, because surely G. Willow Wilson can’t keep this up? Writing an emotionally affecting, funny, superhero comic that manages to transcend the limitations of its genre (mostly neverending mashups with other series, forced crossover storylines, etc.) The only “flaw” I can consistently identify in this series is that it sometimes betrays its other genre (young adult) by leaning a little too far into some of those tropes, getting a teensy bit […]

Somewhat Marvelous

It’s a little weird reading comics after so many years. I used to be an avid collector and dreamt of being an artist one day, until I figured out that I could get more entertainment for less money by reading novels. So I haven’t really read many comics in about 20 years. But I do miss the art. The art here by Adrian Alphona and David Lopez is pretty great, though very different, stylistically. Alphona is looser, less compact, which is actually perfect for the […]

An interesting, dense, if plot-heavy sci-fi techy novel

I went to my Leaderboard post on CBR to see what my last review was, and it was #57 (as of today, I’ve finished book 66). And I posted it on April 8. That’s like a whole month ago. It’s time to get to work. I think I’ve mentioned before that I work part-time (one of THREE part-time jobs, because being an academic is exhausting, and you can never make enough money for the work that you end up doing) at an Islamic college in […]

Unique does not mean alone.

Goodreads recently posted the Hugo Nominations for Novel and Graphic Story, and while I don’t think I am going to make my way through many of the nominated books, I did find a few I was interested in. I already knew about Ms. Marvel and the nomination pretty much sealed that I go ahead a read a few issues. Turns out my library had all six volumes available and so here we are. Oh, also this comment inspired me to do so: “”message 1: by […]
