I cannot emphasize enough how much I am loving the Red Rising series. I’m pre-grieving my reading and finishing of the next and final book. But, I’m also so addicted that as soon as the library checks it out to me, I’m going to devour it. This is dystopian fiction at its finest: fully fleshed out, incredibly exciting, completely believable, deeply poetic. The protagonist, Darrow has my heart. He’s driven, he’s thoughtful, he’s pure but emotional, and he’s young and beautiful. The villains of the […]
When we finally learn to time travel, it will probably be just as boring as this
On paper, this book is the complete package for me: time travel, a mysterious epidemic, a spunky female protagonist, academia, Christmas. I should have loved it. But it was a little… um…. super duper incredibly boring. I’m really looking forward to the Book Club conversation about this, because it would be nice to put my finger on why I didn’t just totally love it. There’s plenty of action, but it’s very repetitive, and never feels like it’s going anywhere. No build, just introduction of characters, […]
No spiders, but some dying at the end
I liked John Dies at the End, and I loooved This Book is Full of Spiders, so I was very excited to get David Wong’s new book for Christmas. It is, as expected, bonkers and great. I think he’s growing up a little. This book is a little less Beavis & Butthead and a little more…I don’t know…Christopher Moore? There’s a bigger story, and a little less teenage boy nonsense, but there’s still a lot of humor, and still a lot of me pausing and […]
Professional athlete of the future turns superhero
This is my last review of the year (and the day)! By some miracle of will power, I met my half-cannonball goal despite only starting reviews last month. Must do better next year, for realz. My final post is for Mara, a YA graphic novel set in the future where professional sports is an even bigger business. Sport competitions keep everyone distracted from the endless world war cycle of Earth. Mara is superstar volleyball player whose been training since she was 2 years old! Barely legal, she lives […]
Robot Love
The Silver Metal Lover was a great introduction to Tanith Lee for me. This particular month, Vaginal Fantasy focused on a robot theme with authors questioning the power of love with an artificial being. This particular love story is about a young, naive rich girl named Jane. She lives a pretty sheltered life in a beautiful mansion in the sky with her mother. All her friends are jaded and mean, living quite the hedonistic lifestyle on their parents money. One day while walking with her gay friend Clovis, she comes across a […]
