“I would like to point out that I specifically asked for no hijinks…”

Lumberjanes: The Infernal Compass by Lilah Sturges, polterink

July 25, 2019 by cosbrarian Leave a Comment

CBR11Bingo – Rainbow Flag! The Lumberjanes’ latest adventure begins when troop leader Jen takes the scouts on an orienteering lesson.  Naturally, weird things begin to happen despite Jen’s plee for “no hijinks!” but the girls aren’t really to blame. Rather, their bizarre compass seems to be acting up, and the ‘janes start disappearing one by one, thrown into some sort of alternate void where they meet a cohort of robot butlers.  EVIL Robot Butlers?! But which conflict is worse: taking down a bunch of evil […]

A surprisingly educational celebrity autobiography

Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah

March 4, 2019 by Malin Leave a Comment

In this very engaging autobiography, Trevor Noah opens up about growing up in South Africa, born from a black Xhosa mother and a white Swiss father at a time when this was literally a crime punishable with several years in prison. The Apartheid regime ended while Noah was still young, but his childhood was still deeply affected by the fact that he was a mixed race child in a society where the races were not supposed to mix at all, to the point where his […]

Sink your chompers into this nutty tail Humorous Stories

August 29, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Honestly, I had great hopes for this newest creation by Mo Willems (as I am a little nuts about squirrels). But I Lost My Tooth has too much in the way of shenanigans and not enough bite in the facts about the subject matter area. Granted there are some pieces of information too sink your chompers into about teeth and squirrels, but I would have liked to have seen more. Yet, I am assuming that for the age it is aimed at (The Elephant and […]

“Comics to make you cry laughing and cry crying”

August 26, 2018 by NTE Leave a Comment

When I was a kid, my dad had a couple of volumes of collections of The Far Side Gallery comics, and I… well, to be honest, when I first read them I was much too young to understand more than one in thirty of them, but eventually, I loved them.  I was so envious of Gary Larson, and his ability to both draw and be funny at the same time, that I spent a significant amount of time in middle school pretending that I also had both […]

Find Yourself in Architecture and other places!

July 13, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

While the story of Brick herself is a little odd in the way it is presented with its minimal colors (a few pages are almost “coloring book-like”) and the story told by Brick in her own voice (young, bit naïve and always curious) the showing of real architectural sites is a great touch. That hits the mark perfectly. Brick: Who Found Herself in Architecture by Joshua David Stien has this fun story of a young brick who wants to find their place in the world […]

“That was, perhaps, the most unfeeling proposal she could imagine. The man was cynical, insensitive, condescending, rude. And she was definitely going to marry him.”

February 24, 2018 by NTE 3 Comments

Guys this book? Is so good. That I’m mad that the next book in the series doesn’t come out for months. (MONTHS! August is a lot of months away.) It’s full of trope-y delicious nonsense, and ridiculous people, and stuff you know could never happen in real life, but who cares? Duke, hideously scarred in The War, loses fiancé and proposes a Marriage of Convenience to the Uppity Seamstress who dared ask for the funds he owes her for creating the lost fiancé’s hideous wedding […]
