Coming to America

Frankie D, Vegan Vampire by Sally Dutra and Brian Dutra

May 31, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Frankie D, Vegan Vampire by Sally Dutra and Brian Dutra, with illustrations by Tiffani Brown is set up as if The Addams Family were from today, a lot more modern (though their understanding of things still not the same as “normies”), plus were actual vampires. This is a fun and sweet book. The silly and clever retelling of a fitting in theme has been done before, but the humor this time around makes it fresh. The characters are maybe a bit of caricatures (there is […]

Let Me Drift Away…

The Child and the River by Henri Bosco

May 21, 2024 by elderberrywine Leave a Comment

Bosco, a French/Italian writer, was nominated for the Nobel Prize four times.  He wrote this novella in 1945 in Morocco, shortly before his return to France.  It is beautifully written, a pastorale so to speak, with definite undertones of Huckleberry Finn.  Pascalet, a young boy, runs away from his caretaker to the forbidden river, upon which he finds an old weathered boat.  Only meaning to rest in it, he finds himself adrift, and then after a brief but frightening squall, ends up becoming grounded on […]

Sisters finding each other

Unhappy Camper by Lily LaMotte

May 10, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I kept trying to read Unhappy Camper by Lily LaMotte for ages. But I couldn’t find a reader’s copy or if I had an online one, it would “time out” on me. Yet, in early May I found an online one and I jumped on it! (Well, not literally, as I would have knocked over my computer screen). And what I would finally read was a fun, thoughtful and interesting story about siblings and learning about who you truly are. Fun illustrations by Ann Xu […]

Four buddies and lots of good times

Sky &  Ty volume 1: Howdy, Partner! by Steve Breen

Surprise! The Adventures of Penguin and Panda volume one by Brenda Maier

May 10, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Picture books are fun but once I have read some, I need a little more. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love (and always will love) my picture books. But when that happens and I need that little more, (mostly because I need a different looking format) I need an early reader. The two I found recently were Sky &  Ty volume 1: Howdy, Partner! by Steve Breen and Surprise! The Adventures of Penguin and Panda volume one by Brenda Maier and illustrated by Fanni […]

Running straight into the mouth of danger….screaming all the way

Skull Cat (Book One): Skull Cat and the Curious Castle by Norman Shurtliff

May 10, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

It is Scully the Cat’s first day as the new garden-keeper at a spooky castle. And by his second day, everyone has gone missing. Is it ghosts? Vampires? Goblins? Dark Sorcerers? Something worse?  You now know the tone of Skull Cat (Book One): Skull Cat and the Curious Castle by Norman Shurtliff. It is just off-the-walls bonkers. Scully is a clumsy, loving son, who is not cut out for adventure. But of course, he lands face first into it. And so much more. With his […]

The Makers Club: A Graphic Novel by Reimena Yee

May 10, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The Makers Club: A Graphic Novel (due August 2024) was read via an online reader copy, however, I can’t wait for it to be published as I know a few people who need this book. First, you should be able to order the title in paper or hardcover; and I recommend hardcover as you will read again and it will get a little bit beat up! Author Reimena Yee made a nice, sweet, familiar story. The unique quality of this coming of age tale is […]
