Next stop: Healing

Next Stop: (A Graphic Novel) by Debbie Fong

June 25, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I assumed Next Stop: (A Graphic Novel) by Debbie Fong would be a funny a minute laugh out loud read/book. Now, while it has funny moments, it is actually a serious story about loss, love, friendship, family dynamics and coming of age. Therefore, you really can’t always judge a book by its cover.  The realistic, serious moments are relatable, thoughtful and even a bit educational. The humor is a nice balance to counter that. Then there is a bit of a supernatural element that you […]

The Fox Warrior in us all

The Fox Maidens by Robin Ha

June 25, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I started The Fox Maidens by Robin Ha as an online reader. However, it was only a sample of about half of the graphic novel. I was both “OH! Now what????” and  “Eh…I get the idea…do I go on?” I decided to go on and asked at my local library for a copy. It took a bit, but it was mostly worth the wait. Ha is the delightful author of Almost American Girl: An Illustrated Memoir. And though The Fox Maidens is fiction, I expected […]

Screw Your Courage to the Sticking-Place

Monster Movie! by Chuck Wendig

June 24, 2024 by Pooja Leave a Comment

Ethan is afraid of everything, so when his best friends Olivia and Harvey insist on him joining in on a screening of a mysterious film considered to be the scariest movie ever made, he refuses outright. However, when the movie turns out to be a monster bent on destroying the town, Ethan must brave his fears if he is to save everyone and everything he loves. There’s a difficult balance to reach with middle grade horror, which I hadn’t thought much before I started reading […]

Just a bit of fun… gone horribly wrong

Read at Your Own Risk by Remy Lai

June 13, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I almost didn’t read Read at Your Own Risk by Remy Lai. I have enjoyed reading their Surviving the Wild books and have had other titles by them on my radar, but at first I didn’t realize this was theirs and second it did not look like it was something I would normally read. But since one goal this year is to break away from the reading norm and try new things, I thought a young adult thriller might be good. Well, it is a […]

Alien Invasion! (Or how I learned how to “wear hat”)

We Are Definitely Human by X. Fang

June 13, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The visitors in We Are Definitely Human are odd, but adorable. Okay, maybe not adorable-adorable, but they are really nice and friendly, especially after how the humans, ah…other humans… are so friendly to them when helping them fix their “car.” The act of kindness has never been so humorous!  X. Fang’s story is as clever as it is cute. The idea of just being kind, just because, is not a new story, but one that bears repeating. And of course, if you can add some […]

I regret nothing with the first book!

Farty Pants: A Stinky Book of Monsters by Eric Geron

Huck and Loona by Emily Kilgore

June 13, 2024 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Books should be fun, but they can also be educational. Of course, if they are both you have the best of all worlds and memorable stories.  Farty Pants: A Stinky Book of Monsters by the team of Eric Geron and Dean Gray (illustrations) who are a gas (I mean to read with, not you know are gassy…then again…)  It is currently available but I read via an online reader copy. Thankfully we haven’t gotten to “smell-o-book” yet, though there were sound buttons (that I was […]
