Lumberjanes do Friendship to the Max Indoors and Out

Lumberjanes (vols. 13-14) by Shannon Watters, Kat Leyh, Dozerdraws

August 2, 2020 by CoffeeShopReader Leave a Comment

Bingo review 14: Friendship Since a tagline for the series is “Friendship to the Max!”, I figure Lumberjanes vols. 13-14 counts for the Friendship square. After a few shaky installments, it feels like the Lumberjanes series is getting its groove back a little. For those unfamiliar, this is a comic book series that follows a group of girls who become friends at the Lubmerjanes summer camp aka “Miss Qiunzella Thiskwin Penniquiqul Thistle Crumpet’s Camp for Hardcore Lady-Types”. April’s the leader go-getter type, Jo’s the smart […]

What’s the Buzz Pea (Bee and Jay)?

Pea, Bee Jay #1: Stuck Together by Brian "Smitty" Smith

July 29, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Pea, Bee Jay #1: Stuck Together is the story of three unlikely friends who get into all sorts of trouble. But that is nothing when you are as smart, clever and cool as they are! When Pea decides to take on a dare from the other vegetables and roll pass the fence all the way to the tree, they are caught up in a terrible storm; blown off course. Where they eventually meet a Bee with a secret (for some reason a couple of other […]

Vampires Get Nervous, Too

Maury the Miserable Vampire by Jeff Roland

July 29, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I was given an online PDF version of the book, Maury the Miserable Vampire (again, a big thank you for thinking of me Ms. Was).  I was not sure what was going to happen.  I searched for a description and the story seemed simple enough, but was it going to be good enough? The art was not my usual “like” when it comes to illustrations. But (come to find out like Maury) I needed to take a chance. In the end, it was not only […]

cbr12bingo Gateway As a former-full-time bookseller and now part-time bookseller, I do not have that one book, author or genre to get a person reading. I have a book/author/genre to fit the person I am speaking with. However, within some genres I do have a go-to author or in one case, publisher. Two areas that many are not familiar with are poetry and graphic novels. Or more accurately in the case of school-aged students they do not want to be familiar with poetry and adults […]

Pretty people doing not pretty things

The Great Gatsby: The Graphic Novel by Fred Fordham

The Great Gatsby: A Graphic Novel Adaptation by K. Woodman-Maynard

July 24, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

cbr12bingo The Roaring 20’s The Roaring 20’s probably would not be the Roaring 20’s if not for The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I am not going to go all English Lit on you and say the meaning of the story but will tell you it is about several 20-to 30-something rich, spoiled, brats (editorial comment) and their boredom. You can say that our narrator is unreliable, judgmental, the whole works. Or not. But in the end, what it is all about is people […]

Oooh, you make me live (CBR12Bingo: Friendship)

The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage by Sydney Padua

July 23, 2020 by octothorp Leave a Comment

I’m sure that tagging this as fiction and non fiction seems confusing to anyone who has not read this book. It’s a strange one, but a damn good one. The first dozen or so pages are 100% non-fiction, devoted to the life of Ada Lovelace, the daughter of the “mad, bad, and dangerous to know” Lord Byron and the absolute last person in the world who should have married him, a woman who then raised Ada alone and kept her from following in her father’s […]
