I scream you scream for Halloween! (Or: Autumn books that can be Halloween books )

We're Going on a Pumpkin Hunt by Mary Hogan Wilcox

She Wanted to Be Haunted by Marcus Ewert

The Little Kitten by Nicola Killen

A Unicorn Named Sparkle and the Pumpkin Monster by Amy Young

September 25, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

This is Halloween, this is Halloween/Pumpkins scream in the dead of night Okay, these four books are on the other side of Halloween. They are not spooky (or at least not to the level of The Nightmare Before Christmas) but they are fun, can acutely be an autumn read (or even anytime read) and can be absolutely perfect for the right audience. We’re Going on a Pumpkin Hunt by Mary Hogan Wilcox is probably my least favorite of the group. That’s not to say it is […]

A swing and a miss from Oprah.

American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins

September 19, 2020 by scootsa1000 6 Comments

I did not like this book. I remember the weird Oprah controversy from last year, but honestly, didn’t pay too much attention to it while it was going on. And then my book club chose it for the summer selection. Most people loved it — regardless of the controversial story of Jeanine Cummins — but I couldn’t really get past her whole story and as I continued reading (well, listening), I got more and more annoyed with her and the story. A quick overview of […]

That’s what friends are for…. (CBR12Bingo 2: Friendship)

Leaving Time by Jodi Picoult

September 17, 2020 by octothorp 1 Comment

I always enjoy reading Jodi Picoult books while I’m reading them, but after I’ve had a chance to think about them, I start having reservations. Usually because she writes about hot topics that feel a bit sensationalized, or because she writes about realistic situations that always wrap up a little too neatly. Or because she writes characters rather than people, if that makes sense. So I think I liked this book more than her past novels because while the characters are very much Book Characters, […]

Hilo: The Boy Who Crashed to Earth by Judd Winick

Hilo V02 Saving the Whole Wide World by Judd Winick

Do you ever look at a book and think, “Well that’s not going to be for me?” Then one day, you find it on the library shelves (or in my case the website and I could put in a request for curbside pickup) and you didn’t want to waste your five-limit book allotment, so you pick it up? And did you then ask yourself, “Why did I wait so long to read this?” Okay, I might have been in the right humorous mood, but I […]

A spoiler but I’ll warn you where!

My Best Friend by Julie Fogliano

September 9, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

About a month ago, my cell totally pooped itself. I was able to factory reset it, losing everything in the process. Practically a month to the day, it poops itself again (just when I had gotten things back to mostly normal). Only this time it really “Shakespeare in the park” itself. (I was not allowed to swear as a child, so I used words that started with the same letter or sound. I think you can guess this one.) Therefore, I found myself on a […]

How Do You Hide When You’re an Elephant?

The Elephants’ Guide to Hide-And Seek by Kjersten Hayes

September 4, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I wanted a book to read. I was at work where it can be ironically hard to find “the one” as there are too many choices. I had a pile of picture books and looked at them and randomly read the covers, backs and insides. When I found “something” (I don’t even remember what that was) that hit me as it was going to be “the one” I said, “This one. We are reading this one.” (Yes, that was the royal we. We were alone […]
