Spunk is the name of the game!

Julia’s House Moves On by Ben Hatke

Oona by Kelly DiPucchio

November 4, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Spunk is the name of the game with Julia and Oona. Two different gals, but who both know how to “get-r-done!” Julia’s House Moves On is the latest in the Julia books by Ben Hatke (an author who covers several age ranges with their books, this being for the 5 and up crowd). This darn cute story about “best laid plans” and how things will work out for the better just is silly, funny and educational. As the joke says, “You want to make God […]

Magical Friendship: cbr12bingo – “Friendship”

Phoebe and Her Unicorn in The Magic Storm by Dana Simpson

October 30, 2020 by Dome'Loki Leave a Comment

“Phoebe and Her Unicorn” began as a web comic by Dana Simpson in 2012 and then a few years later became a syndicated comic strip in newspapers, that is still in active publication.  The first five books in the series are compilations of those comics.  Phoebe and Her Unicorn in The Magic Storm is the first standalone graphic novel. Phoebe is an average girl who befriends a unicorn, Marigold Heavenly Nostrils.  Together they tackle the mundane, school, to adventure, like when they solve mysteries as the […]

A mistaken identity that leads to ones true identity

Ana on the Edge by A. J. Sass

October 30, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

When I saw that I could request a reader copy of Ana on the Edge by A. J. Sass, I figured, “Why not?” As worse case would be I do not like the story and passed it onto a coworker who might.  Lunch reading was slow going, so I decided to take it home and try and give it a longer at a time reading stretch. Unfortunately, that did not work out, as I needed to excuse myself for a two-day hospital stay. I did […]

Two sets of friends for two new early readers

Do You Like My Bike (Hello, Hedgehog #1)? by Norm Feuti

Bunbun & Bonbon: Fancy Friends, by Jess Keating

October 29, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

The nice thing about working in a bookstore is that you can find books you might not be exposed to otherwise. I can pick up a book that would not be first on my list to read, read it, then find out who the perfect audience is. Or not recommend it at all. (Yes, I am looking at you zombie Christmas tree book). And here are a few of my thoughts on two books that are meant for the younger crowd to see if you […]

“The latest graphic novel by William Shakespeare”

Yorick and Bones by Jeremy Tankard

October 15, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

You must have a certain type of humor to understand some of Yorick and Bones. The Shakespearian references can be amusing, but not always easy to read. I have a very basic knowledge on the subject; therefore, I was able to see the humor/joke and able to read the parts that are more “Shakespearian language” in nature. Yorick themselves only speaks in that “old English/Shakespearian” (to a point) which is where the humor comes from. However, it is modern enough to keep today’s reader not […]

Ever read a book that makes you hurt? And you’re not sure if that’s a bad thing?

Joe Quinn’s Poltergeist by David Almond

October 15, 2020 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Ever read a book that makes you emotionally hurt, but you are not sure if in a good or bad way? Happens every so often to me. And when it does, I know I have either read one of the most amazing things ever, or the biggest piece of crap ever written. Joe Quinn’s Poltergeist by David Almond (with illustrations created by Dave McKean) was one of those books. I was a bit confused about the theme of this book due to the fact you […]
