Kind of like Jane Eyre but not really

The Wife Upstairs by Freida McFadden

November 10, 2025 by Sophia Leave a Comment

I needed a book to listen to for my commute, and I needed it immediately. Somehow, The Wife Upstairs (2020) by Freida McFadden grabbed my eye when I searched available audio books at my library. I was not familiar with McFadden, but she has written a large number of successful thrillers, and she seems to have quite a following. Sylvia Robinson is not in a good place in her life when the book begins. She has just lost her job after being unfairly accused of stealing, she […]

Review of the Alibis Collection

Death Row by Freida McFadden

The Ex-Wives Club by Sally Hepworth

False Note by David Lagercrantz

The Skydivers by Chris Bohjailian

Good Neighbors by Chad Zunker

Small Things by Wanda M. Morris

June 22, 2025 by Classic Leave a Comment

4 stars for this one. I thought the first story in the “Alibis Collection” was really strong and honestly the best out of the bunch. I thought that McFadden actually stretched herself in this one in a good way. I didn’t see the twists coming and loved how she tied things up her. “Death Row” follows a woman named Talia Kemper has been on death row for years after being convicted of the murder of her husband. We find Talia remembering things before she was […]

Milly knows your secrets, but she has some of her own

(The Housemaid #1) The Housemaid by Freida McFadden

(The Housemaid #2) The Housemaid’s Secret by Freida McFadden

April 9, 2024 by kfishgirl 1 Comment

I read both of these books as actual real physical books, which for me is a big deal. I was over my aunt’s house and she was like “you have to read this book” about the first one, but I only had the weekend to read it, because she borrowed it from the woman she babysits for (and she’s crazy – my aunt). So I hit my timeline because I had a timeline, but also because the book was good! Then, mom of the kids […]

To continue the summer of Freida…

The Locked Door by Freida McFadden

October 30, 2023 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

Ok this summer of Freida story was a little hit or miss. I liked a bunch of it, but there were times where it was a little unbelievable. Our main character is Nora Davis, who is a surgeon. She seems like a good person, but she’s harboring a dark secret. For years when she was a little girl, her dad was murdering women in the basement of their home. Nora spends her life mostly alone and actively rebuffs attention from people who want to change […]

I was on a “And Then There Were None” kick with mixed results

One by One by Freida McFadden

One by One by Ruth Ware

October 30, 2023 by kfishgirl Leave a Comment

Ok I read the original Agatha Christie version of this story, “And then there were none” a while ago, and then I apparently went on a bender. I know I’ve read at least one or two other versions before this one too. Here is Freida’s version, because it was apparently a summer of Freida for me. I thoroughly enjoy the premise of these “and then there were none” stories, because it’s usually a group of seemingly innocent but secretly kinda crappy people who one by […]
