“I made promises to you that I’m not sure I can keep.”

Forever... by Judy Blume

November 28, 2025 by faintingviolet Leave a Comment

Most years I try to read a banned or challenged book as part of Banned Books week (which I’m VERY late for this year). There are many reasons I do it, but one of the most important is that I want there to be library requests in my system for these books as its one way to help keep challenged books on shelves (there are lots more suggestions for actions in this Book Riot article). This year I was having a tough time deciding what book to choose as I’ve been struggling in the past few years […]

Devil's Knot: The True Story of the West Memphis Three by Mara Leveritt

September 14, 2020 by Jake 1 Comment

Knocked out two books this past weekend, one fiction, the other non-fiction, both somewhat relating to the supernatural. Forever 3 stars Considered by no less than Lawrence Block to be the great New York City novel, I knew I had to grit my teeth through Forever after failing twice before, especially considering the recent death of its author, Pete Hamill. And while I don’t like it nearly as much as Block, I’m glad I did. Hamill is a good writer; I’ve already added another of his books to […]

Rereads Both Ruin Books and Heighten Them

February 20, 2018 by Ale Leave a Comment

This post will be full of SPOILERS, so please stop here if you’d like to read the book. I’m teaching a fiction course this semester and to make life easy on my first leap into the forays of academia, I’m having my students read a few books I already know. This has proven to be both a good and bad idea (for me, not my students). On the good, revisiting “Forever” on an academic level has brought out so much of Hamill’s craft that I […]

The Longest Life

May 5, 2017 by Ale 2 Comments

My second five-star book of the year! “Forever” follows Cormac O’Conner, an Irishman from the 1730s, who becomes gifted with long life through a series of spectacular and semi-magical events after he immigrates to New York. There’s one catch to his near-immortality, though: he can never leave Manhattan Isle. He becomes penned into the island’s boundaries where he watches the dank little Hudson River town turn into the roiling metropolis of the modern era. He lives through British soldiers fighting Washington’s troops in the forests around […]
