For Three!

The Book of Three by Lloyd Alexander

Vera Kelly Is Not A Mystery by Rosalie Knecht

Never Easy, Never Pretty: A Fan, A Team, A Championship Season by Dean Bartoli Smith

August 17, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

Knocked out three books this weekend, all of which I enjoyed to varying degrees…   The Book of Three A cute, charming fantasy novel. Perhaps a little too derivative of LOTR (the wolf-like character might as well have been called “Gollum”) but still entertaining and occasionally refreshing when compared to the rest of the genre. I also enjoyed a compelling female character that had autonomy without having to be everyone’s Hashtag Badass Woman (in other words: I appreciate a male writer who can write a […]

The Pokes, The City

The Dallas Cowboys: The Outrageous History of the Biggest, Loudest, Most Hated, Best Loved Football Team in America by Joe Nick Patoski

March 22, 2021 by Jake Leave a Comment

Back in February 2020 (aka The Before Times), I visited my in-laws who had moved to the Dallas metro area the previous summer. I had never been to Texas, much less Dallas, so I was excited to see the city. It was…something. Not good or bad, just different. The vibes there were really strange. The weather was weird (somehow hot and cold simultaneously). It felt like someone used hundred dollar bills to paper over cardboard boxes and sterile, charmless buildings. But it still had a […]

Enjoyable sports romance.

Fumbled (Playbook, #2) by Alexa Martin

December 16, 2020 by narfna Leave a Comment

I liked this, but it felt a little unbalanced to me in the hero vs. the heroine. It was a fun Saturday afternoon read, but I’m not sure if I will read more from this author, as the next two books in the series have very hit or miss reviews. But this one was fun! Mostly. Poppy is a single mother to ten year old Ace. She and Ace’s father, TK, were high school sweethearts, and now TK is one of the most famous football […]

cbr12bingo – Debut

Boys of Alabama by Genevieve Hudson

July 26, 2020 by andtheIToldYouSos Leave a Comment

Oh dear. Boys of Alabama is a lot. In Genevieve Hudson’s debut novel we are introduced to small-town Delilah, Alabama through the eyes of Max- the new kid in town. Max and his family just moved to rural America from urban Germany, and we leap into the culture shock with them. Delilah has two religions: Christianity and football- and the two form a dangerous communion. Max is sensitive, quiet, and gay. He can also bring dead things back to life; one touch and wilted flowers bloom. […]

I’m a Little Better at Madden Now

Football For Dummies, 6th Edition by Howie Long

December 27, 2019 by Halbs Leave a Comment

When I was growing up I played baseball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, and lacrosse. I also ran triathlons and was a regular mountain biker and gymnast. For some reason, football never appealed to me. I didn’t even like watching it on tv until I was in college. So, I missed out on a lot of the fundamental of the game. While I obviously had a lot of interest in sports, the football lack of knowledge felt like a glaring deficit. Also, my friends almost always beat […]

Decline in Fall

October 18, 2018 by Jake Leave a Comment

I am a lifelong football fan and a Baltimore Ravens supporter. When the Ray Rice scandal hit, I swore off the sport for a year because of how poorly the NFL and the Ravens organizations respectively handled the situation. The Rice situation provided me with an excuse to do something I had wanted to do for awhile: watch less football. It’s tough to overstate what a hold the NFL had on my life in my 20s. I’d plan work, break dates, check my phone in […]
