Travel and Food Through the Eyes of Bourdain

March 16, 2014 by lefaquin Leave a Comment

A Cook’s Tour is the pretty standard Anthony Bourdain blend of offensive humor, drinking stories, and gratuitous food porn. I greatly enjoy his style of writing, and love reading his descriptions of food – for me, it comes alive. Although Bourdain is first and foremost known for his food writing and biting, sometimes nasty tone, I think his strongest writing comes when Bourdain gets sentimental and examines the beauty in the world, reflects on his surroundings. Read the rest of my review here.

Cameron Diaz loves her body (and yours, and yours, and yours …)

February 10, 2014 by xoxoxoe 3 Comments

“Oh great,” you might think, “Another celebrity diet book.” But Cameron Diaz has taken a different spin with The Body Book: The Law of Hunger, the Science of Strength, and Other Ways to Love Your Amazing Body. Yes, it will most likely garner interest because of its celebrity association. But Diaz is not interested in anyone who might pick up this book to not eat or eat less or grab it as a quick guide to losing weight. She wants to celebrate bodies — hers, yours, […]

Good Food Can Be Fast

January 29, 2014 by xoxoxoe Leave a Comment

As an addendum to an earlier post, I picked up a cookbook, Gordon Ramsay’s Fast Food, by celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay from our local library. Like Ramsay himself, it is bold and basic in nature. His recipes, from dishes featured on his television seriesThe F Word, range far over various cuisines, but all seem pretty possible to accomplish, as long as one has the right ingredients. Each recipe can be completed in less than an hour, too. The recipes are all designed to be easy peasy (once […]

Stanley Tucci really loves to cook (and bake, and grill …)

January 16, 2014 by xoxoxoe 1 Comment

I heard that the actor Stanley Tucci had written a cookbook — not a surprise from the star and moving force behind the cinematic delightful ode to Italian food, Big Night. But until I picked up The Tucci Cookbook I had no idea how deeply his love of food and cooking went. Readers of this cookbook will be happy to find included his step-by-step directions for the movie’s signature dish, timpano, and its many variations. This is not just a book of recipes, but a collection of stories, as […]

Yes, Please

January 5, 2014 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

There’s this thing I really like to do: eat. Reading is right up there (throw in playing with my kid, sleeping, and the occasional roll in the hay, and that there’s a perfect day). When I lived in New York, I was lucky enough to eat some very good food prepared by some absolute geniuses. One place I always wanted to go but never made it was Aquavit, a Michelin-starred Scandinavian restaurant that served more than just the Ikea-style meatballs we all know and love. […]
