I couldn’t tell you the last time I read Murakami, but I now remember that the last time I read him, I swore I would read all of his work, and I’m making that oath again. He is magnificently imaginative, terrifying, mystical, and believable all at once. He throws you into the deep end and patiently waits for you to swim or drown; he doesn’t care which happens. He moves the finish line just as you’re about to reach it, over and over again. You […]
I Do Love a Punny Title
I don’t know why I hadn’t thought of food memoirs as their own thing. I’ve read a few, and I have a whole shelf on my Goodreads labeled “food related”, but I just never quite made the connection until Book Riot’s Read Harder Challenge included reading one and I had no trouble at all picking a couple to put on my to read list (most were there already). Cannonball Read loves Lucy Knisley, so I decided to start with hers. Because graphic memoirs and novels […]
Writing so good you can taste it
Sweetbitter was a great summer read. It’s the story of Tess who comes to New York City after graduating from college in the midwest with a liberal arts degree. She somehow works her way into a job at a very prestigious restaurant despite having less than the bare minimum of required experience. What follows is a coming of age story filled with broken hearts, delicious food, and coke fueled nights. Apparently Danler worked at Union Square Cafe and pulled from her experiences to create the […]
Not for the faint of stomach
Volume 2: 4 stars Chew is a truly strange comic book where a lot of the characters have abilities out of the ordinary with regards to food and drink. Tony Chu, our hero, is cibopathic. This means that he gets a psychic impression from everything he ingests. This can mean that he can picture the tree an apple came from or see the field a vegetable was grown in and how it came to be harvested, or he can experience the last moments of a […]
Huge Disappointment
This book was a huge disappointment. I have read two other Florand’s (The Chocolate Kiss – 5 stars, and The Chocolate Touch – 4.5 stars) and really loved both. This book did not hold a candle to either of them. The writing was very uneven and some of the ideas either repeated too often or not fully fleshed out. It reminded me of when I would write term papers in school and write the same thoughts several different ways, and then go back and pick […]
Sometimes Something Simple Can Comfort The Most
This was a perfect graphic novel for newbies to the genre like me. I read Persepolis a looooong time ago, but this year I’ve been wanting to explore the genre more and this seemed like the perfect follow-up to the wonderful Hyperbole and a Half. I’ve always loved eating and cooking, so this graphic memoir was a perfect fit. Lucy Knisley grew up surrounded by family and friends in the food business (chefs, gourmets, critics, restaurant owners), so delicious food filled her life from the […]
